Aye mair questions than answers!

Hi again J.J.
Thanks for all this detail you're coming up with ... and a fantastic picture too! You're getting as much excitement out of this as I am It's much appreciated and really helps bring ancestry to life!
In the Minnedosa Cemetery Records, would you happen to know what the headers for the table might be, e.g.: Section (A,B,C, etc) Lair (34 in the case of the Armit family) and ?
William Armit was the Company Secretary of The Hudson's Bay Company and, I believe, was related to David.
I'm not sure about the Town, but the Lake and River are most definitely named after David. I found these entries in an e-book Place Names of Manitoba by Penny Hann (ISBN 0-88833-067-7) just yesterday:
“ARMIT, lake, west of Swan Lake, Manitoba-Saskatchewan border – This lake, in the Porcupine Provincial forest Reserve, was named by J.B. Tyrrell when he was surveying the area. After David Armit, chief trader, Hudson’s Bay Company in Manitoba House in 1889."
“ARMIT, river, flows northwest into Red Deer Lake – Also named by Tyrrell for David Armit.”
Today I have received an ancestry report for David's sister Fotheringham Armit who emigrated to Australia following her marriage in London, Englandto a sea Captain - Charles William Davidson - so now I have that to add to the Armit branch of my tree
David emigrated to Canada about 1865 - 1867, although the 1906 and 1911/1916 Census are in dispute over the date. I thought the tone of the 'descendant' comment you referred me to was a bit rude and uncalled for. I'd found it earlier and instantly formed that opinion
How do I access the information at the Glenbow Museum? Is it available on-line?
Regards
Chiad Fhear

I love the HBC archives...Fabulous history...
The cemetery numbers and letters represent location, as on a map....
Glenbow has wonderful files & they will send you copies of their info for a fee...I don't know of anyone who does lookups there... You can send for a copy of the photo as well... The email address jacquie gave you will get you information on the signup date for david's servant's contract with the HBC. They may send you a copy of the image as well...He likely sailed within the year...He is already established here by 1867 from the info on the publication I gave you
David & Mary were part of the signing of treaty #4 http://www.ainc-inac.gc.ca/al/hts/tgu/pubs/t4/trty4-eng.asp
I have tried to find the HBC profile on David, as he was prominent and so should have a huge file (sample here, in which he is actually mentioned) http://www.gov.mb.ca/chc/archives/hbca/biographical/g/garton_john1847-1888.pdf There was one on my hubby's LOWLY HBC servant, so a chief trader should have tons of references to him at the archives... They do general searches for free... http://www.gov.mb.ca/chc/archives/hbca/about/reference.html
Forgot to answer about the descendant.....yes... I though the comment was a bit haughty...

Horse's held...Am really busy with things and this was my chewing gum when I relaxed...Glad I could find some things of interest... If you need anything here in Manitoba just shout and jacquie or I may be able to find it...and in Ontario we have tons of helpers if you need births or marriage dates...Just add a reply to this query, no need to ever start a new one as all are listed here... Back to other things...J.J.

My name is John Rae Armit, my grandfather was John Rae Armit and my great grandfather was David Armit married to Mary Taylor. He was a junior trader at Mainitoba House (Kinosota). My sister still lives there. He came from Kirkwall Orkney, and our family before that, we believe, came from Polduff in Fife
