Question about a baptism
« on: Tuesday 19 May 09 20:39 UTC (UK) »

I have been sorting through reams of paper collected over the years.I have some baptisms for a local church 5 pages,of which one seems a bit of mystery, well 2 actually
Baptized 21st may 1851 Emma Caroline (Adult) Baptized 22nd May 1851 Sarah Louisa (Adult) no Christian names given for parent in both cases. The fathers surname in both cases is Blakeway  Occupation Gentleman Mothers name none given.Where born Hall Green,Hale Birmingham. Birth date None given. Any idea what the incomplete entry could mean Huh

Carol i hadn't realized anyone would find them on the census but thank you anyway. This family are no connection to me at all,I was wondering why 2 adults were Christened in a Church in Wallasey Cheshire.when they were born in Birmingham years before It said they were adult,no mothers name or fathers Christian name, no date of birth.I just thought i would ask,you never know i might get asked myself one day because i do have all the Baptisms for the church. Its even stranger now looking at the census, wonder if anyone is doing the family tree?

I wonder if it was because they were adults.  I have an indirect ancestor (if you know what I mean) who was baptised as an adult into the Catholic Church in Cumberland towards the end of the 1850s, and his entry details are similarly incomplete.  Perhaps adults were assumed to be able to make their own decisions and it wasn't considered necessary to record full details of parents etc.  After all, baptism was mainly a religious ceremony, not primarily for civil registration purposes.
