Looking for someone to help me with my Goldsmith family. James Herbert Goldsmith married Jane Barber in Kent. Had three children then migrated to Victoria, Australia. Any information would be grateful. Thanks

Hi

Births March qtr 1905

James Herbert Goldsmith Thanet  Volume 2a Page 1090

If this is the correct entry - you will need a copy of his birth cert to establish his parents names as there are lots of Goldsmith marriages in Kent

You can order online at www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
using the reference I have shown above

Can we have a bit more info then, (like dates)?

James Herbert marries 1835-40 - how do you know this? How do you know wifes maiden name?
When did they emigrate? What are children's names and birth dates and places?
Have you got them on any censuses?

What info HAVE you got, then we will try to find any more info that is available

1851 - Westminster, Middlesex

James GOLDSMITH head mar 28 smith j(ourneyman) b.Brighthelmstone Sussex
Ann wife 23 b.Brighthelmstone Sussex
Samuel son 9 b.Hampstead Middlesex
James son 6 b.Brighthelmstone Sussex
Mary dau 4 b.Brighthelmstone Sussex
George HOLLAND? visitor mar 23 smith j(ourneyman) b.? Hampshire?

HO107/1479 folio 803 page 64

Not sure about 1841 - there are a couple of James GOLDSMITHs in Brighthelmstone, Sussex plus quite a few others scattered about of the correct age Undecided

I'm not quite sure where Kent fits into the picture here Undecided

Would Samuel be Samuel Thomas GOLDSMITH would you know?  I only ask because there is a birth registration in the Edmonton registration district (this would cover Hampstead at that time) June quarter 1842 which might fit http://freebmd.rootsweb.com - a copy of which would confirm mother's maiden name or are you descended from one of the other children as it looks as though James may have been married more than once given Ann's age Huh

Kat

Was Jane BARBER the first wife, mother of Samuel.

FreeBMD has a marriage in Mar qtr 1842, Edmonton, 3 69, for a James S GOLDSMITH. One of the brides listed is a Jane BARBER. Matches district of birth for Samuel Thomas. The index is typed so the S could be a misread of H.

Jane GOLDSMITH death June qtr 1843 Hailsham - a possibility. Can't see another James marriage to an Ann. Not the Ann HESMAN in 1843, she married Horatio HOADLEY.

The James in Brighthelmstone in 1841 with probable parents James and Abigail is probably the right James. Ancestral file has James'  children as Samuel Thomas, James Herbert and Mary Abigail, mother Jane BARBER, all submitted info though.

See they went to Victoria. Have you checked Victorian BDMs online, particularly deaths, to see if James' wife was Ann or Jane.

FreeBMD has Mary Abigail GOLDSMITH birth as Knighton, but looking at the image it is Brighton. Knighton is miles away near Shropshire/Herefordshire.

William James GOLDSMITH, Mar qtr 1845, Brighton, 7 273 - No Herbert as a second name anywhere in this time frame
Mary Abigail GOLDSMITH, Dec qtr 1847, Brighton, 7 303
Ties in with 1851 census ages and birthplaces

Either of these certs will confirm if mother is Jane or Ann.

Another possibility.

Jane GOLDSMITH death Dec qtr 1848, Brighton, 7 256. Would make Jane mother of the three children if this is her.

James GOLDSMITH married Ann RUSSELL, Jun qtr 1850, Hailsham, 7 515 - second wife??

Hi,
One of the deats of the children say it was Jane, but haven't found a death for her as yet. It has her name as Ann on passenger list. Where is the best to order certificate's from as I haven't got a credit card but I can direct deposit.

Kat

1841
Mount St, Brighton
James GOLDSMITH, 40, Whitesmith
Abigail GOLDSMITH, 40
James GOLDSMITH, 17
Frances GOLDSMITH, 14
all born in county
HO107/1123/B4/Brighthelmstone/Sussex/ED8/F19/P1

Check with the Victorian BDM site. They might have a way of direct depositing or sending a cheque. Ordering online from the Vic site you can downline the image immediately. Costs you to look at the indexes though as well.

Not sure about the UK. Someone else may be able to help there.

Will check Sussex Marriage Index later to see if there is a marriage for James and Abigail.

James GOLDSMITH snr died between 1841 and 1850 as I think Abigail remarries in Mar qtr 1850 to James HOOPER. They are around in Brighton in 1851 and 1861. James HOOPER's first wife was Mary GOLDSMITH.

From the Sussex Marriage Index
Brighton, East Sussex, 26 Dec 1827
James HOOPER, bach
Mary GOLDSMITH, sp botp (B)

Mary HOOPER died Mar qtr 1848, Brighton. There are three James GOLDSMITH deaths in Brighton, Jun qtr 1842, Mar qtr 1847 and Dec qtr 1847.

Abigail HOOPER death Dec qtr 1869, Brighton, age 68, which fits with age 50 in 1851 and 60 in 1861. Abigail was born in Hurstmonceux, Sussex.
