Bachelor of Marston Fleet...what does this mean exactly?
« on: Wednesday 20 May 09 10:47 BST (UK) »

Hi all...

In preperation for my trip to the UK, am madly trying to figure out what I need to search/clarify...and I've come up with a query...

I'll give the long-winded explanation...so as to give as much info as possible.

George HILLSDON (Hilsden) was b. 1809, Waddesdon (source: PR's & census's).  According to PR's, his parents were Thomas HILLSDON & Ann.  By elimination & the fact, that he was the only George born in Waddesdon at this time, I traced all his sibling, and his eldest brother was born 1804.  The closest marriage of a Thomas & Ann, in Waddesdon, was that of Thomas HILLSDON - widower of this parish  & Ann CASTLE - spinster of this parish, in 1804.

Now, there is only one other marriage of a Thomas that would fit, (to make him a widower) and that is Thomas HILLSDON, to a Katherine Cooper in 1796, in Waddesdon.  Katherine dies in 1801, leaving two boys.

In both marriages, one of the witnesses is the same, implying that this is the same Thomas.

However, in the marriage of Thomas and Katherine, Thomas is down as "bachelor of FLEET MARSTON".  And this is what kind of irritates me, as there are no parish records for any births of a HILLSDON in Fleet Marston, or any variation.  There is however a birth of a Thomas in Waddesdon, that would fit, not just by date, but also by the fact there is a sister that is also a witness at one of the weddings.)

So the question is:  why would the Parish Clerk write that he was of Fleet Marston?  Could there be any other reason for this?

I understand that Fleet Marston is only down the road from Waddesdon, but it does/did have it's own church, and parish records.

Any ideas?

Thanks Smiley

It quite often meant that the person was living in that place at the time of the marriage. He could still have been born elsewhere
