Affledwick otherwise Beauchamps *COMPLETED* thanks
« on: Friday 03 April 09 22:36 UTC (UK) »

Hi All,

I'm trying to find the location and/or picture of a house called "Affledwick otherwise Beauchamps" somewhere near the Buntingford/Wyddial area in Herts.

There appears to be an old place, possibly a village, called Affledwick in the very early years and I'm wondering of they are one and the same.

Also would like a pic of a place called "Little Court" in Buntingford.

Any ideas or suggestions on where to look or who to ask would be most welcome.

Thanks

Di

Hi,

There is quite a bit about this place on the National Archives Site.  If you google it, it comes up with quite a few details.

Ohhh Lovely Peter - Thank you so much. You never fail to deliver miracles.  Kiss

Last I heard Layston Church was on the market as well - sounds like a few of the antiquities in the area are looking for buyers - sad, but that's the way of the world.

I'd been looking for a picture of Little Court for ages so many thanks for that one as well.

Thanks Marg for the TNA suggestion. I have seen (ie copied  Wink ) everything I could find about this place - I just couldn't find the exact location.

Thanks for your help

Di

Hi Di,

Have now located a copy of the engraving of Little Court which appeared in Sir Henry Chauncey's History of Hertfordshire (1700)   ...  it's on the way to you.

Hi all, I'm new to this so please make allowances for me ...
I have come across a message from Lady Di asking for the location and/or picture of a house called "Affledwick otherwise Beauchamps" somewhere near the Buntingford/Wyddial area in Herts.  I too am interested in this and would love a picture of the house but don't seem to be able to send Lady Di a personal message.  If you're out there Lady Di, would you kindly email me please?
Thanks very much.

Hi Becky2 - welcome to RootsChat

More than happy to share information and a picture of Beauchamps as it looks today.

A very kind Rootschat member alerted me to the fact that this lovely home is on the market right now so there are a few pictures of the outside and inside (BIG bonus) on the net.

You need to have 3 messages on here before we can send PM's to each other.

Looking forward to sharing both house and family information.

Di

(Thank Jane for alerting me to Becky's message  Kiss  )

Hi

I found this post when searching for the history of our lovely new home. We are hoping to sympathetically restore the house and would love any info on it.

We feel quite privileged to be the new owners of such a lovely property

Welcome to Rootschat Beauchamps,

You must be so thrilled to be the proud owners of such a lovely property.

My 9 x great grandfather, Barnard Turner, originally leased Beauchamps from Sir Edward Atkins in 1669 for one year. Barnard Turner eventually purchased the manor, including lands in Layston, Anstey, Gt Hormead & Wyddial soon thereafter.

Beauchamps remained in the Turner family as the property was part of the marriage settlement when Barnard's daughter, Anne, married Thomas Crouch in c. 1690. (Members of the Crouch family also owned nearby Corneybury and Alswick.)

Barnard Turner, having left Beauchamps to the newlyweds, moved to Little Court in Buntingford when he died in 1696.

Thomas Crouch died at Beauchamps in 1701 and his wife Anne remained there for many years. The property was eventually passed down to one of their children and I believe it was sold out of the family sometime in the 1700's.

Most of the above information is available freely on the 'net but I'm sure that you could find a lot more at the Hertford archives (HALS)

I would certainly be very interested in any further information or old pictures that you may discover about Beauchamps.

Thank you for taking the time to join RootsChat and reply to this thread. I hope you have many years of peace and joy in your new home.

Di

Edit: One of the best historical records I found of the history of Beauchamps is in Sir Henry Chanucy's book "The Historical Antiquities of Hertfordshire with original counties...."
This book is freely available on the 'net and well worth reading.
