Gavin Todd - Manitoba
« on: Wednesday 20 May 09 13:39 UTC (UK) »

I am hoping for some opinions on whether a Gavin Todd I am researching appears in the 1911 census twice.

Gavin Todd was born in Scotland in 1859. He moved to Canada sometime between 1885 & 1890 and can be found in 1901 living in Morris, Provencher, Manitoba working on a farm as a laborer.

But there are 2 Gavin Todds in the 1911 census, and I'm thinking they are the same person.
One is the same laborer who is still in Morris in 1911, and whose details mostly match the 1901.
But there is a second Gavin Todd, roughly same age, again from Scotland, Presbyterian, laborer who is a patient in a hospital in Portage la Prairie.
This Gavin dies there 13th Feb 1913 and is buried in the local cemetery.

Is it possible for Gavin to appear in the census twice?

There is only one Gavin Todd in the death vital records for Manitoba up to 1938.
Checking Scottish birth records there is only one Gavin Todd born in 1859 as well.

Hope someone can solve this mystery for me.

Chris.

Chris, all of my personal research has been through Ontario records.  I don't know anything about Manitoba records.  However...

Ordering a death certificate might give you more information (or might not).

You could try contacting the cemetery and ask if there might be a record about Gavin.  I had a brickwall ancestor and when I wrote to the Toronto cemetery, asking for any information about the ancestor, in addition to telling me who was buried in the same plot and giving me all of their information, they told me the most important thing I needed: his town of birth.  This was the only source that gave his birthplace (everything else was: England)!  You do have to tell them your relationship to the deceased and why you are inquiring (genealogy).

My ancestors are on the 1901 and 1911 census.  One of them has just about every ancestor's birth year incorrect by one or two years.  The other census has several incorrect birth years.  I wouldn't be too concerned that your Gavin doesn't have the exact birth year.

Have you tried looking in Scotland for a Gavin Todd born in 1858 and 1860?  That might also determine if you could have found your man.

Have you tried looking for your Gavin's Attestation Papers?  If he has papers, he obviously is not the one buried in 1913.

(Archives; Ancestors Search)

Have you tried looking for local papers for mention of his death (actually, either in Scotland, or in Manitoba)?

Of course, he could have settled in America, or moved to another province, but it does look like your Gavin in 1913.

Hello Chris,

Check out the following website www.cangenealogy.com/manitoba.html

Under cemeteries you will find Portage La Prairie click on it key in your surname Todd  and you will find his burial information.

It is possible to get a copy of his death from Manitoba Vital Statistics. I think the cost is about $12.00

To answer your initial question, yes it is possible for a person to appear on the census twice. I've come across that many times on Canadian, US, UK and Scotland census. Although the official enumeration date for the 1911 Canada census was 1 Jun 1911 and the information given is supposed to be a snapshot of that day, the actual enumeration would have occurred over a number of days and in many cases the information given based on who was where when the enumerator was there.

I just received a email  from the AutomatedGenealogy.com Forum Index

and this is the reply that I got on the 1911 /Manitoba/Portage La Prairie/48 Portage La Prairie/page 24/

line 13; where the household from page 19 line 34 through page 24 line 21 is annotated as "Home of

Incurrables", Gavin Todd is 50,single, from Scotland,Presbyterian,Column 19-21 states: admission to Home: 1911 .  1911/Manitoba/Provencher/3 Township 4 in range 1 west of the 1stM/page 31

Line 9 Gavin Todd is 50, single from Scotland,Presbyterian

Also the Manitoba Vital Statistics contains the following death registration:

Reg# 1913-007078-Todd,Gavin G,,Sex: Male, Date of Death: 13/02/1913

Place of Death: PLAP,  Age: 52 years

In view of the admission date to the home and the other data being the same except for the slight variation in the

age. I highly suspect that these three entry are about the same individual: therefore I linked them to his 1910 entry

Dear All,
Thank you so much for your advice. Looks like I have some more work to do with new websites to look at.
This whole process of researching in Canada is completely new to me.
I live in Adelaide, Australia and up until now have never needed to do any research in Canada.
But I guess that's the fun of genealogy, learning new things.

Had a quick look at Scotlandspeople.
There is only one Gavin Tod/Todd registered in Scotland in the period 1855-1865, who I know is the correct person I am researching.

But I will go now and do some more searching.

Thanks again.
