Henry A Smith
« on: Wednesday 20 May 09 20:00 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I've been told that one line of my family come from Romany Gypsy's.

My grandad was born in Leominster, Hereford in 1931.  On his birth certificate, and mother are named as Henry Smith, and Elsie Florence May Smith (nee Perkins).  They lived in a caravan on the corner of Sharpstone Lane in Shrewsbury.  Henry was a Hawker from his caravan.

I have no idea where to start with tracing back Henry's family.  I've managed to locate records for Elsie and traced her line back successfully.

Does anyone have any ideas of how I can find out about the family of a person who lived in a caravan??  Perhaps someone out there knows something about Henry?  I'm guessing he was born in the 1900's/1910's.  It doesn't help that his surname is Smith!

I would be extremely grateful for any help!

Thanks

Jade

Hi

A good starting point would be to search for the Smith/Perkins marriage and get a copy of the marriage cert

This would show Henry's age at that time and also his fathers name and occupation

Was your grandfather their firstborn or did he have older siblings.  There is no obvious marriage on freebmd but this is a possibility for a birth for Elsie

Hi Jade

You can look specifically for Smiths living in caravans on the 1911 census site: www.1911census.co.uk

Just use the Advanced Search form and insert Smith as the Surname and Caravan as the Residential Place.

About a dozen Henry Smiths come up, 4 of them aged under 12.

Good Luck!
