ERO-Problem Logging In-Help Please?
« on: Thursday 21 May 09 15:56 UTC (UK) »

I've found a possible ancestor mentioned in Seax-Essex Archives Online.  His record is dated 1840-1841 and is from "Auctioneer's notebook".

Do the costs vary greatly, or is there a standard price for ordering records, please?

Would anyone know what might be included in such a record, besides the property the man owned?  Thank you.

UPDATE:  I am now trying to log (register) into the site.  It will not accept my address.
*Enter the first line of your address

Would someone know what I am doing incorrectly, please?  In addition to typing my address ON the first line, I have tried typing my street address on both lines; only the second line; numbers on the first line and street name on the second - nothing is working.   Cry Cry

Hi Lisa

I'd suggest that you press the "Contact Us" button on the SEAX website and ask your question direct to the Essex Record Office.

They're very helpful people there and I'm sure would be more than happy to help!

Hi Diblet:

Since posting this thread, I've also found a will for this man, so I definitely will figure out the necessary steps to order the records.  Thank you for your help.  Grin

Hi Lisa,

I use the SEAX online Parish Registers, I used to have to log on as Guest because the site would not accept my Australian post code, I did have the necessary ERO Reader's Ticket but not a UK postcode.

Not sure what part of the SEAX site you are trying to enter but to enter the site to view the online PRs you do not have to log in anymore, it used to require a Reader's Ticket number and post code.  Below is address of the page that I use to access ERO, I only access the site for PRs and wills, so perhaps you are visiting another part of the site that I have not encountered, perhaps someone reading this will add to it.

Hi findem:

Thank you very much for your help.  I am almost certain I've found my ancestor's father's will so it is very frustrating not being able to order it.

I tried the site address you gave me, searched for "James Mumford", found his will (D/AEW 44/4/7), along with two other items I would like to order.

When I choose either the reference or item title and select "order" it asks me to sign in.

I can google for ancestor's for hours and hours, but trying to order certificates or any other paperwork frustrates me so much.  Cry  I don't know what else to do.

Hi Lisa,

I think your best bet is to contact the ERO and explain your problem to them, they will email you an order form which you can fill in and post back to them, you can also pay by credit card, not sure which ones they accept but I know Visa is OK.

I think your main problem is probably the same as mine, a non UK post code, do they still require a Readers Ticket number and post code to sign in?   My brain has just kicked in, I think the reason you are asked to sign in when trying to order is because that particular order system is not for actually purchasing a copy of the document, it is for ordering the documents to be retrieved from the archives ready for a proposed visit to the ERO to view them.

Regards.

Thank you for your help again.  I will write to them.  I was hoping I would be able to work it out and order the documents, but it might just be faster to contact them directly.

Thank you very much for your interest and suggestions.  It is very much appreciated.
