Houston and Sempey of Ballymena
« on: Thursday 21 May 09 20:16 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I am hoping I can connect with anyone connected to either of the Houston and Sempey families of Ballymena.
Isabella Sempey (Houston) was the daughter of Elizabeth Houston (Dale) and the granddaughter of  Samuel and Margaret Dale (Beattie)  of Ballycloghan.  My great grandfather Ferguson Dale was the brother of Elizabeth, who immigrated to Australia in 1857.  The names Samuel, Ferguson, Dale and Beattie were frequently used in the naming of the Houston and Sempey children.

If you could fill in some dates it would help us find more information for you or suggest places you could search next.

Here goes with the dates and other info:
Elizabeth Dale born around 1842/3), daughter of Samuel Dale and Margaret Beattie of Ballycloghan, Ballymena, married James Houston 1864/5 in First Broughshane Presbyterian Church. Isabella Houston, the eldest of 7 children born 1865 in Galgad/Galgorm/Connor, married Hugh Sempey in 1885 and had 11 children (1911 Census - 8 surviving). Maggie, Isabella's sister, born around 1873 lived and worked on the Dale farm till after their uncle, Samuel Dale, died in 1919.  Both Isabella and Maggie were included in their Grandmothers Will (Margaret Dale died in 1892) with  Maggie Houston the most likely person to have inherited the farm after her Uncle Samuel Dale died.

My great grandfather Ferguson Dale was Elizabeth Dale's eldest brother (b. 1837 in Ballycloghan, Ballymena) who immigrated to Australia in 1857 leaving behind His parents with 4 children ranging from 10 to 17 (John would have been 17 but have not been able to find him).

Here is the 1864 marriage:-

Date of Marriage   28 Oct 1864
Groom Name   James HOUSTON
Bride Name   Elizabeth DALE
Church   Broughshane First Presbyterian Church
Parish   Racavan
Civil District   Ballymena
County   Antrim

You can order a transcript of the certificate online at http://www.ancestryireland.com/quis.php

Search for Elizabeth Dale marriage in 1864 and it costs £4 to order the information.  There are 3 possible James Houstons in the right area/year - sons of James, Vincent and Samuel respectively - but as you know Elizabeth's father, there's less risk of you ordering the wrong certificate.

Thanks for both of your responses. Can either of you find out where Elizabeth Houston's mother Margaret Dale was buried.  Margaret died in 1892 at the farm in Ballycloghan but her burial cannot be found at the First Broughshane Cemetery where her son Samuel and daughter Ellen are buried or anywhere in Ballymena region, I have checked.  And the Irish Death Certificates do not state where the person is buried.

Hi

Not sure if you have this

The Will of James Houston late of Gilgad County Antrim Farmer who died 13 May 1889 at same place was proved at Belfast by James Knox of Gilgad and Samuel Dale of Ballycloughan both in said County Farmers the Executors.

Thanks, but I had already searched the PROV and found it.

My great grandfather (Ferguson Dale) did not discuss the family left behind in Ireland and neither did his wife, who was an Orcadian. The only people who might have information are the descendants of Elizabeth Houston (Dale). So I am hoping that one day I will make contact with a Houston descendant.
