David Griffiths Furnace Terrace 1901 search help
« on: Thursday 21 May 09 20:44 UTC (UK) »

Apologies in advance as I have very limited information, but if you are someone who has access to sites that can search by address you might be able to help. I am trying to find David Griffiths and family living at Furnace Terrace, Llanon in either the 1901 or 1891 census. Any details you might be able to find would be appreciated.

Thank you

Thanks. That's brilliant. I had given up on this one. I had another reply a long time ago where they had found a David Griffiths but married to someone else which didn't fit the fact I had. David Griffiths married to a Louisa Griffiths is a perfect fit as I have a daughter of William Griffiths, Louisa born abt 1873, Llanelly. David Griffiths, as son in law, was the informant on the death certificate of William Griffiths.

Hi

As a follow on from above I came across the below today which relates to David and Louisa's son Willie

"Willie Griffiths, Private, 53625, Welsh Regiment. Willie was the Son of David and Louisa Griffiths, of 24, Furnace Terrace, Pontyberem. He enlisted at Llanelli into the 15th Battalion, Welsh Regiment ( known as the Carmarthen Pals, regiment). The 15th Welsh was raised by the Carmarthenshire County Committee during October 1914. They became part of 114 Brigade, 38th Welsh Division on 29 April 1915. The brigade landed at Havre during December 1915. They fought through some of the hardest and most famous battles of the Great War-at Mametz Wood during the Battle of the Somme, and at the Pilckem Ridge during the battle of Passchendaele. During March 1918, the 15th Welsh were in reserve at The Laundry, Erquinghem. On 6 March they relieved the 13th Welsh in support trenches at Houplines. Eight men were wounded by gas on 9 March, and for the next few days the area was continually shelled and gassed by the Germans. Willie was wounded here, and brought to a Casualty Clearing Station at Merville, where he died of wounds on 11 March 1918. He was just 22 years old, and is buried at Merville Communal Cemetery Extension, in Grave I. C. 33."
