and Marlene, following thru on what Gill has found, if this is your couple they must have had sufficent money to pay their fare and travel in a bit more comfort than the assisted migrants.

Hi Gill,
That's great! That must be them. However her age doesn't quite tally but it does seem to vary as seen on 1891 & 1901 census. Thank you very much for that . You are all so helpful. Much appreciated. Now to find out when Fanny & Ethel returned.

This looks like a likely death for George Wood.

1881 Brunswick, age 27, parents Saml Wood and Martha Dyson (reg. no. 6683)

Oh poor Fanny, new baby in a new country, and hubby dies not long after both  Cry Cry

So Fanny could have left Australia anytime between 1881 and 91.
Not having any luck with the Vic shipping site.

Hi Marlene,

I have found:
http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=23

Index to Unassisted Inward Passenger Lists to Victoria 1852-1923
Name                       Age
WOOD   GEORGE   26   FEB   1880   SOMERSETSHIRE     B   378   001
WOOD   FANNY      20   FEB    1880  SOMERSETSHIRE     B   378   001

"I've found a name... how do I see the passenger list?
As well as each passenger's name and details, your search results list a fiche and page number. The Port code (British, Foreign or New Zealand) indicates which set of microfiche to look at (series VPRS 7666, 7667 and 7786)"

Could this be them?

Gill

This is an index stating where to find the full details.
The full details are held at the Public Records Office in Melbourne (the site where Gill found the index details ) and also the State Library.  There are probably other genealogical groups that have them in there holdings.
The extra details that can be gained would be:
occupation, which county they are from, read or write, religion.

Hi everyone,
Getting there bit by bit with help. I've been looking at UK Incoming Passenger Lists 1878-1960 on Ancestry. If I put in Ethel Wood with year of birth 1881 - 3 entries,  but I can't open individual records as I havn't got worldwide subscription.  If I put in Fanny Wood with her correct year of birth - no entries, but just name - 19 entries, but I still can't open. Any offers  would be much appreciated. Must drag myself off here now and do some gardening.
                  Regards
                                    Marlene

Hi Marlene,

Afraid I can't help you with the Ancestry as I don't have the worlwide subscription but if you go into the National Archives site:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/searchthearchives/migration.htm they have the passenger lists cover 1878 to 1960 & you can get into the images.

Lovely day for gardening,

Gill

Hi Gill,
Sorry I didn't reply yesterday. I did try your link to National Archives but it transferred to Ancestry so I still couldn't view individual records. Not to worry, I know they came back as on 1891 census.
     Thanks for time,

Hi Marlene.

Sorry about that, but maybe because I haven't renewed my subscription lately, I can get into this because I don't have the worldwide one.

The Ethel Wood's born 1881 +/- 2 years from Australia:
                                       born            arrival date
Ethel Wood            29       abt 1881      1 Aug 1910        Sydney, Australia
Ethel Wood            58       abt 1878      10 Jul 1936        Brisbane, Australia
Ethel Wood            59       abt 1878       6 Mar 1937        Brisbane, Australia
Mrs Ethel A Wood   46        abt 1883     16 Jul 1929         Australia
Ethel Wood           29         abt 1875      13 Mar 1904       Sydney, Australia

As you will see, the arrival dates are all in the 1900's & nothing came up either when I searched 1881/1891 for arrival dates from Australia.

Isn't it frustrating!!

Hi Gill,
Thanks for your help. Never mind, at least I know they got back somehow or else they wouldn't have been on 1891 census. Probably remain a mystery.
                 Regards Marlene
