They had a son Thomas Waters Powell born in Hay Sept 4th 1852.  George and Mary both died in Australia  Thomas married Emily Puckett in Yass Australia.  Emily was born in Sutton Poyntz

Hi

There is this entry on the 1851 Census that could well be your couple.  It does give some different information as to birthplace for George however.

1851 Census Wales Breconshire Hay
HO107/2491/309/30
Brook Street

POWELL
Richard Head Marr 60 Gardener Herefordshire  Staunton on Wye
Ann Wife Marr 60 Herefordshire Brilley
George Son Marr 29 Turner Herefordshire Brilley
Mary Wife Marr 26 Breconshire St Mary

ADDED --  do you have Mary's death certificate from Australia?? It should give you her parent's names.
Cheers

Hi Karen Lee,  many thanks for replying.  from the looks of it Mary Waters must be the first link to Hay Breconshire, we thought it was the other way around. His gravestone says he was born in Hay but that could be a mistake. Mary,s death cert doesnt have the parents names on it. That is definitely the parents for george. Is any info available on Richard and Anne.  I have  George and Mary's marriage cert. 25.8.1850 Clerkenwell.  It states her father as Henry Waters, butcher. I am unsure how to proceed.

Hi

I have had a look on the IGI for information on the POWELL family and there is a bit of a conundrum.....

There are two George POWELL born to parents Richard and Ann.... one 9 Aug 1829 Brilley Herts and one 9 Feb 1824 Hay Brecon.  Both are extracted from the Parish Registers, so they are accurate.

That kind of confuses the issue a bit... considering that your George has on his headstone born Hay.

What was George's father's occupation on his marriage certificate??

Cheers

Hi Karen,  Just checked all my info.  George was definitely born on feb1824 Hay Breconshire. (Inscripted on the gravestone).  His father's( Richard) occupation on the marriage certificate is listed as farmer.  The writing is pretty bad, but I think it has George's occupation as gardiner.!  Son Thomas Waters Powell's birthcertificate states he was definitely born in Hay 4th sept 1851, but lists George's occupation as Turner!! There is a site on google for George Powell b-1824 Hay on Wye but the info is only the same as we already have.  I thought Mary Waters may be the key.  when I tried for Mary and Georges' birth certificates the dates are before 1837, so the only way is parish registers or bishops transcripts.  I don't seem to have much luck with these.

Thanks ELLEGEE

Hi - Brilley is just a couple of miles out of Hay, so George came from Hay on Wye.  The 1851 census is right
8 Brook St, Hay.  George was probably born at Ann's parents home as was often the case, so he was born Brilley.

1841 ages differ but that's nothing unusual
same address Brook St, Hay.
head - Richard Powell age 55, ag labourer
wife - Ann Powell age 50
daughter - Elizabeth Powell age 10
daughter - Charlotte Powell age 8
George would be 19 and has moved out?

I think this is Mary's family in Brecon 1841
head - William Waters age 50, weaver
wife - Mary Waters age 45
son - William Waters age 20, mason
son - Thomas Waters age 20, turner.
daughter - Mary Waters age 14
son - David Waters age 6

I think this may be Mary's baptism, St David's, Brecon.
Mary Waters 26th Nov 1826, daughter of William and Mary
David Waters 4th September 1834
Annie Waters 7th June 1824

cheers Fred

Hi Fred,  Thanks for that information.  That certainly looks like it is the right one.  Do you know what I have to do to get a birth records etc from the parishes.
