Scottish records check list
« on: Friday 22 May 09 02:23 UTC (UK) »

Wouldn't it be great to have a basic check list of sites / things to search.  I don't mean obscure sites, just the obvious.

Perhaps, if folk agree, ideas could be added to this thread and someone (me?) can put it on a document in a logical manner.

I'm posting this only on the Scotland board for now because the sites / techniques are different from those elsewhere in the UK or overseas.

Dave

I'll start....
Some ideas which I'm sure people can add to......

International Genealogical Index (IGI) - a few different points of entry

Monumental Inscriptions (MI's)

Genealogical Forums

Search engines

Google, Yahoo etc (surprising what is out there on the www)

On each certificate / document check for other clues....

partner
parents
siblings
witnesses
children

Repeat the searches for those other family members found.

Dinnae forget common sense AND thinking 'outside the box'

PS - Mods - I'm sure you will not object to naming other sites in this instance.

Local archives could be added as well - they have original documents which haven't been published like burial registers, some church records and other valuable sources.  Most local authorities will have information on their websites about their archives service.  University archives are a good source too.

Local registrars may also have family history sources, or will provide access.

I agree with aspin - great idea Dave!

How many times have we all forgotten to add things to 'favourites' then can't remember where 'such and such' information was to be found?

Plus, if info isn't to be found on one site - there's always a chance it could be found on another so to have a 'checklist' handy as a reminder would help no end.

Thanks Archivos - I thought I had that covered with..

"Local Libraries......Local family history societies"

University archives is a good one.  Local registry offices is an example of an obvious source I'd omitted.  I've amended the original post to include them.

As I am around 3/32 Scottish this sounds a great idea.
Currently stuck on finding births for Ann BRAND (BRAN/BRANN on OPR) who married Wm Eagle in 1798 North Leith and Margaret PEARSON who married John Lankshear in London in 1808 but in 1851 shows born Scotland - around 1781/82. Currently doing some reviews with the 10 free credits.

Thanks for suggestions - I have added the IGI ideas to my page

Here are some others I have

War:
Scottish National War Memorial  - www.snwm.org.uk

also useful is Geoff's search engine which has extra search fields for the cwgc database, e.g. you can search by general keyword.
WW2 - http://www.hut-six.co.uk/cgi-bin/search39-47.php
WW1 is currently down but should be back up http://www.hut-six.co.uk/cgi-bin/search14-21.php

Glasgow University roll of honour - http://www.archives.gla.ac.uk/honour/

Newspapers?
http://archive.scotsman.com/  (maybe mention that some people already have access here, it's extortionate)
Could mention under Mitchell that they have microfilms, Evening Times. Herald etc?
Edinburgh Gazette - http://www.edinburgh-gazette.co.uk/search  (also London http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/search and Belfast http://www.belfast-gazette.co.uk/search)

Old Occupations?
http://www.scotsfamily.com/occupations.htm
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?r=551&430

First names:
Scottish naming tradition? - I always forget it!
Common anglicisations?
Common diminuitives?
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?561

Surnames: (there's a lot of misinformation out there, these are the 2 most accurate I know of although I still wouldn't vouch for everything.)
http://www.ancestry.com/learn/facts/default.aspx  (can also get some georgraphical data)
www.surnamedb.com

Virtual Mitchell?
http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/virtualmitchell/

Will update if I think of more!

Thank you all this is very useful but some links etc duplicate what is already on the "Where do I start" thread here:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,24468.0.html

There some other basic where to get info stickied at the top of the board.  Plus we have a full Resources board here...

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,367.0.html

Please do a search on the URL you intend to post as multiple links out of RC I believe deteriorates our Google rating and we get punted down the results returns.  So people won't find us.

All the best,
Pam
