I can't see the family you are looking for in the St. Andrew the Less registers which is where I would initially expect to find them.
Have you got them in the 1951 census and there an address?

Hi Selina,
Yes in 1851 census they are living in St Andrew the Less, Ecclesiastical Parish of Christ Church, City and Town of Cambridge.
Property 54, Newt (?) Road Jas Hall (name Samuel but sometimes entered as James) and family including two sons Thos Jas (3) and Arthur Walter (10 mo). Image attached.
The town of birth comes from their immigration records for both boys: Native place and country: Barnwell, Cambridge
They had an older daughter in the 1841 census, who must have died - in IGI she is shown: CATHERINE HALL Female Christening: 28 FEB 1841 Chesterton, Cambridge, England Parents: Father: SAMUEL HALL Family Mother: MARY ANN
No burial record found yet though for her. It's not clear to me where Chesterton lies in relation to Barnwell and St Andrew the Less.
cheers matt

Hi Matt,
That would appear to be an abbreviation for Newmarket Road and fits with the area of Barnwell.
I have the Parish Reg CD for St. Andrew the Less (Christ Church) but although I will check again, I am sure the baptisms of Thos and Arthur are not there.
The Parish of Chesterton, which is where your Catherine's baptism appears to have taken place is the other side of the river to Barnwell.
The District of Chesterton encompasses many village parishes.
Will keep my eye open for anything which might help.

On FreeBMD there is a death registered of a Catherine Hall - June quarter - 1842 - Chesterton District (which includes Chesterton Parish) - 14 24 which might apply.
By the way the 54 on the 1851 Newmarket Road address would be the Schedule Number, not the house number.

Again looking on FreeBMD - I wonder of the birth registration in the March quarter of 1841 of a Female Hall, Chesterton District 14 41 relates to Catherine.

Thanks Selina,
I guess I'm getting to the stage where I'll have to start investing in UK BDM certificates!
Samuel and his wife had five children according to her Australian death certificate. They only arrived with three sons in Australia, and I knew about Catherine from the 1841 census. So somewhere in Cambridge is another child!
cheers, matt

Hi Matt,
I can't see a birth registration for Arthur.
Is it possible that Thomas is the one registered in the March quarter of 1848, Cambridge district?
Also do you know if the marriage of Samuel Hall and Mary Ann Wells, Chesterton District December quarter 1839 are yours?
Who was the third son?

Yep - that's their wedding in 1839 and i have that certificate: "Marriage solemnized in the parish church of Chesterton in the County of Cambridge" - though not sure what the church is named, or whether parish records provide more or less information comparoed with a civil marriage registration.
Children we have Catherine 1841 as found by you. William born 1843, baptized 09 APR 1843 Chesterton, Cambridge, England (IGI)
Thomas James abt 1846 and Arthur Walter or Arthur Albert depending on the record abt 1851 bothas discussed in Barnwell Cambrige (immigration records)
I once looked for Arthur in civial records and found Arthur Albert Hall 1855 Oct-Nov-Dec Peterborough Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire
which is very late, but the only arthur albert registered in Cambs. Slightly confusing.

OK I can't think of anything else I have that can help but when I go to Record Office next time, which may be some while, I will have a look around.
