Mumford/Jeffery Marriage in Kingston 1887
« on: Wednesday 13 May 09 22:58 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone pop into the Surrey History Centre in Woking and check a parish record for me please?

The Kingston Life Cycles Database records a marriage between Sidney (sometimes known as Sydney!) Mumford and Eliza Jeffery on 24/12/1887 at St. Paul's Church, Kingston Hill.  The groom's father is listed as Frederick Mumford which confirms this is a relative of mine.

The 1891 census also confirms that Sidney and Eliza were living in Kingston as man and wife.

However, there is no record of a marriage in the GRO marriage index.  There IS a record of a marriage of an Elizabeth Jeffery, but the other names on the page do not include Sidney.

The Surrey guide to parish registers shows the marriage records for St. Paul's Church for 1887 are held at Woking.  It would be very helpful to have any further information shown against the above marriage.

TIA for any help on this.  Or any other ideas!!!

Hi Les

Have you contacted the Surrey History Centre directly and explained your dilemma to them as told to us?

As you have the source of the information, names, dates, and the church, they may be willing to help you.

If you are unsuccessful or have already tried, please let us know.

Thanks for that link Dawn.  One bit of searching I hadn't done!  I'll post here what they reply.

Just thought I'd report back that both the Kingston Uni. (of the Life Cycles Database) and the Surrey History Centre have been exceedingly helpful by looking up the parish register for me.

But neither could throw light on why the Parish Church record seems never to have made it into the GRO Index listings.

Has anyone come across this before (post-1837 marriages)?   Am I missing some obvious reason?

Let me just add that the Life Cycles Database is a very useful system for linking Census data to parish records.  In addition to the marriage I referred to earlier, I've since found a couple of other links I never knew about!  It would be marvellous if this could be rolled out across other Unis. for example!

Thanks for letting us know.

As to why entries don't make it into the index, it happens more frequently than you think. You only have to look at the handwritten additional entries at the bottom of the pages of the indexes to see.

The indexes are compiled after the parishes have submitted copies of their entries, if the parish clerk was late in doing this and missed the deadline, they didn't make it into the index. Other than that, human error by just missing an entry out would by another cause.
