Hello Kath
I have received a copy of my Grandmother's Marriage Certificate dated 18th September 1897 and it shows her father as Thomas McEwan , factory labourer, all residing at 27 Noble Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne.
With your help - we found them in the 1881 and 1891 census residing at 40 Noble Street with Sarah McEwan her mother b. Armagh, Ireland. This seems to contradict the belief that my family had that they all came from Co. Mayo.
I cannot find Thomas, Sarah and the rest of their family in the 1901 census and wonder if they all went back to Ireland, leaving Elizabeth in Newcastle after her marriage.
There are no records, that I can find, of any of the children's births, or any indication as to when Thomas and Sarah left Ireland for Newcastle.
However I will keep searching - you never know!
Thanks again.
Audrey

Free BMD has possible records for Newcastle:
Marriage September 1891Margaret McEwan (she would be young though and not sure whether she is Margaret or Mary ) 1897 Margaret McEwan
Death: December 1891 Thomas McEwen 49 yrs
Marriage September 1892 Sarah McEwan but there is only one bridegroom and two brides and the other bride married the groom that is there
There are, though, lots of McEwans in Newcastle.
Even if Elizabeth didn't have her father as deceased on the marriage certificate, there is always the possibility that he was- not always shown.
Thomas, the oldest child in 1881 is shown as being born in Newcastle around 1870 and at that time, Thomas and Sarah would be around 30ish. So they could have married in Ireland prior to arriving in Newcastle or in England if you could find the marriage.
I would try that birth certificate for Elizabeth and see what transpires re the name.
cheers Kath

Hi Kath
I have at last received the Birth Certificate for Elizabeth McKeown (not McEwan) with father as Thomas and mother Sarah - nee Hannen. The writing on the Certificate is not good so Hannen is a good guess. Thomas McKeown - X his mark - may account for the difference in the spelling - how would he know what was written.
I am now trying for Sarah Hannen and Thomas McKeown marriage in Ireland - so wish me luck!!
