HUNTER family in Tasmania
« on: Saturday 23 May 09 01:54 UTC (UK) »

Looking for a William James Hunter who, according to family lore, went to Tasmania as a 13yr old and working back from his death certificate, this would be about 1853 ish.

Been through migration passenger lists with no joy. Any ideas.

There is  a William J Hunter on the electoral rolls - would this give a more accurate birth date or place of birth. Do not know parents names or where they were from. Family lore suggests north England or Scotland.

William J married into a well known Tasmanian family and the wedding was documented with family background of the bride only.

Any ideas of where to from here ?

Electoral Rolls do not give details of ages, only address and occupation.

Is this the marriage?  There are a number of Wm HUNTER and one other James William HUNTER marriages in Tasmania.

HUNTER William James  27 years
FAIRCHILD Mary Anne   23 years
2 Jun 1881
Registration Place PORT SORELL   397/1881

So his birth could be 1853 or 1854.

When you say the 'wedding' was documented with the family background of the bride only...do you mean the marriage registration or perhaps a newspaper report?

Do you have the marriage certificate?

However Tas certs don't give names of parents of bride and groom until 1896. Sad

Sorry for sounding like 20 questions Grin

Cheers

Thanks for the reply,
The wedding was documented in a newspaper article, which made it quite valuable for family research because of the lack of information on wedding certificates as you noted.  I will check the names again of the bride.  Would seem the arrival date and the birth date dont match - will need to go back and double check these.

The arrival from India may be close as no one seems to know where William J came from, but would mean he was 13 when he arrived but born later than we first thought.

Will check back to certificates and other family members to see if this is all possible.

Thanks for the Link to the archives. It has been good to search for other Hunter connections.
It is the right William J Hunter for the marriage - checked the bride's name.
It could be that William was a crew member on the India as when I went for the same time and same ship there were a number of names. No parents yet but now have a better birth date to work on.

Cheers
