Hampshire IGI Transcriptions
« on: Saturday 23 May 09 16:28 UTC (UK) »

Hello,
Although I realise that the IGI does not list all of the records contained on any one film by the LDS, of a particular parish.
Can anybody please tell me roughly what sort of percentage remains untranscribed ?

Are we talking about a very small number (as in less than 1%), or is it likely to be something greater than 5% ?

By way of explanation, I suspect that one of my ancestors (plus a few siblings) may have been baptised at Christchurch, Hampshire Independent c1800.
However, they're not on the IGI, or VRI, or The Official Non-Parochial BMD.

I'm wondering if it's worth my while sending for the film at my nearest LDS centre and making the trip there to view it.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You and Regards, Alan.

It would only be possible if the records have been filmed by LDS.  If not.............

I would expect them to be at TNA, Kew in RG4.  Looking at the catlaogue, the reference is RG4/717 for births and baptisms for the date you are interested in.

How flexible have you been with the spelling of the name?  You may need to be very flexible.  Undecided

Hello Nell,
Thank you for your reply and the information.

The Baptisms at Christchurch Independent c1800 are on the IGI and also Hugh Wallis's Batch Numbers.
There are several Corbins on there, but not mine.
(Of course it's possible that they are not there).
However, 3 of my distant relatives seem to believe that our Corbins (John born c1795, David born c1798, Mary born c1803, Abraham born c1805) were baptised at Christchurch.
Strangely none can remember where they obtained the Baptism records.

Hants Records Office checked Christchuch Holy Trinity for me, but to no avail.

This leaves me wondering if they took place at the Independent Church, but didn't get transcribed from the film onto the IGI.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Thank you and regards, Alan.

It would be very unusual that four members of one family (where there any others?) would be completely missing from the register, either established church or non-conformist.

I think you may have to question the basic premise that they were baptised in Christchurch and look much further afield. Undecided   Look at the film for confirmation - or otherwise - of your theory.  Four omissions at various times lead me to think of other explanations.  What the truth is, I couldn't say.

In 1861 Abraham gives his place of birth as Avon, Hants and in 1871 Haven, Hants.

Is this in or near Christchurch?   Huh

There is a river by the name of Avon in the parish of Christchurch.

My other thought is that it should be Havant - which is not really near Christchurch.

I've not been able to track down any of these Corbins - anywhere  Sad

Have you looked in neighbouring Dorset for the baptisms - perhaps in their mother's home parish?

Perhaps there is no formal record of their baptisms because they were carried out in someone's home/meeting house.

Hello Bearkat, Jenny 53, & Little Nell,
Thank you all for your information and suggestions - I do appreciate them all.

The parents of this family of Corbins are believed to be John (born c1766 at Sopley) and Rebekah Tizzard.
This couple married at Sopley (AVON is a tything of Sopley close to Christchurch) on 14/7/1788.
They had 1 child, James who died in 1790 at Sopley.
They then disappeared until 1841 when John snr. (widower) is living with his son John (my 3xGt Grandfather) at Kinson, Dorset.
John Snr. dies in 1843 at Kinson, but is buried back at Sopley.
Meanwhile other children were born to this couple (Rebekah c1792 & Sarah c1797), who were both buried back at Sopley.

My John (jnr c1795), David (c1798), Mary (c1803), & Abraham (c1805) all claim to have been born at either Avon (Sopley), or Christchurch.

I've now searched Sopley PR, Christchurch orthodox PR, Independent IGI, Ringwood, Holdenhurst, also in Dorset Kinson (Canford), West Parley, Hampreston.
So far unable to find their Baptisms.

Thanks again and regards, Alan.

It may be that you are not going to be able to find these baptisms.  Sad

You might be able to prove parentage by finding a will.  You could try searching online -

Hampshire Records Office

http://calm.hants.gov.uk/DServe/Advsearch.htm

or

Dorset Hampshire Records Office

http://www.dorsetforyou.com/index.jsp?articleid=386932

There is a pedigree of the Corbin family deposited at the Dorset Records Office.

Hello All,
Thank you for your help.
Unfortunately, no luck with the Wills, but I'm still working on it.

Kind Regards, Alan.
