there was also another family of Witt's in Usworth at the same time around 1900 could anyone find a link of the two family's i know John was from Wiltshire but it seams a small village to have two family's of  Witt's in it.

Hi Alan

For reference,

1901: Usworth Village, Durham
RG13 /  Piece: 4703 /  Folio: 107 /  Pg 3
Head: John WITTS 69, wid, Collier Above ground labourer, b Preshute, Wiltshire
Servant: Margaret LEE 50, unm, Housekeeper (Domestic) b Gosforth, Northumberland

The other family:
1901: Red Row, Usworth Village, Durham
RG13 /  Piece: 4703 /  Folio: 118 /  Pg: 25
Head: James H WITTS 33, Coal Miner Hewer, b Usworth
Wife: Sarah A WITTS 28, b Lamesley, Durham
Son: Thomas Wm. WITTS 6, b Usworth
Son: Fred A WITTS 5, b Usworth

FreeBMD BIRTH: James Henry WITTS - 1868 - Chester le Street (which would cover Usworth)

1871: Grt Usworth Village, Durham
RG10 -  Piece: 4994 /  Folio: 31 /  Pg 14
Head: Susan WITTS 26, unm, b Stilkey??, Norfolk
Son: James WITTS 3, b Gt Usworth
Son: Charles WITTS 1, b Gt Usworth
Visitor: Jerimiah?? FLANARY 49, wid, Labourer, b Ireland

1881: Village of Eighton Banks, Lamesley, Durham
RG11 -  Piece: 4985 /  Folio: 22 /  Pg 38
Head: Frederick PROCTOR 30, Waggon Wright, b Shouldham, Norfolk
Wife: Sarah PROCTOR 36, b Moston, Norfolk
Stepson: James Henry WITTS 13, General labourer, b Usworth Durham
Stepson: Charles WITTS 11, Scholar, b Usworth Durham
Son: Frederick PROCTOR 7, Scholar, b Lamesley, Durham
Dau: Susan PROCTOR 4, Scholar, b Wrekenton, Durham
Dau: Amelia PROCTOR 2, b b Wrekenton, Durham

MARRIAGE:
Fred PROCTOR and Susannah WITTS - Dec Qtr 1872, Chester le Street

Although the 1871 states Susannah WITTS to be "Unm"arried - I think she was probably a widow.......and was nee PURDY:

There is an extracted entry on the IGI:
MARRIAGE - 19 Jul 1890  Eighton Banks, Chester Le Street, Durham
Charles WITTS (son of William WITTS) and  Mary WILSON

Census 1891 show this Charles who married in 1890, is a match in age and pob for the son of Susan WITTS (maybe nee PURDY) late PROCTOR. (The 1901 Census just has Charles'  pob as City, Durham). It looks like he and Mary may have only had the one child by 1901.

FreeBMD MARRIAGE  Dec Qtr 1866  - Chester le Street
William WITTS and Susannah PURDY on same page

I think this William WITTS is the same one who died in a mining accident in 1870, age 25 (so born abt 1845)
http://www.dmm.org.uk/colliery/u003.htm
Usworth Colliery
(died) Witts, William, 1 Aug 1870, aged 25, Engineman, by drum of hauling engine

FreeBMD DEATH:
William WITTS age 25 - Newcastle on Tyne - Sep Qtr 1870

This death would fit Susan being unmarried (widow??) on the 1870 Census.

Cheers

William WITTS born between 1843 and 1846 all England:
FreeBMD:
William WITTS - Mar Qtr 1843 - Cirencester
William WITTS - Dec Qtr 1843 - Gloucester
William WITTS - Sep Qtr 1845 - Marlboro
William Francis WITTS - Sep Qtr 1845 - Newport Mon

You would probably need the marriage certificate of William and Susannah (provided they are the pair on the page who married each other!)  to acertain the father's name and occupation for William, in order to step back with his line. But the tempatation is to suspect he is the one whose birth is registered in Marlboro(ugh), Wilts  in 1845 - this district covers among others, Preshute Wiltshire

IGI: parents named: William WITTS and Ann had the following children in Preshute Wiltshire
Caroline WITTS chr 1824
James WITTS chr 1827
Harriet WITTS chr 1830
John WITTS chr 1832
Mary Ann WITTS chr 1834
Emma WITTS chr 1842
Wm WITTS chr 1845

1841: Cant find  Huh

1851: Village of Clasford? (Clatford?) , Preshute, Wiltshire
HO107 /  Piece: 1838 /  Folio: 286 /  Pg 17
Head: William WITTS 49, Ag Lab'r
Wife: Ann WITTS 46, Ag Lab'r
Dau: Harriet WITTS 21, unm, Ag Lab'r
Dau: Mary A WITTS 17, unm, Ag Lab'r
Son: Henry WITTS 14, Ag Lab'r
Dau: Sarah WITTS 12, Scholar,
Son: William WITTS 5, Scholar
All born Pershute

1861: Mores Farm - Hamlet of Axford, Ramsbury, Wiltshire
RG9 -  Piece: 725 /  Folio: 78 /  Pg11
Head: Henry WITTS 24, ag lab, b Preshute Wilts
Wife: Mary WITTS 22, b Ramsbury
Son: William WITTS 3, b Axford
Dau: Sarah WITTS 1, b Axford
Boarder: William WITTS 15, Carter, b Preshute Wilts

Can't find a suitable IGI birth entry for chd Henry and Sarah who in the 1851 household, but it still looks very promising that this is the family of William WITTS who ended up in Usworth. Added to this, the fact there is appears to be a son John WITTS chr 1832 to the same family (if the IGI lot are all one family) which is a match for the age of your John WITTS (who in one other census at least, stated his pob as Clatford Wilts).

Cheers

John WITTS b abt 1832 Wiltshire

1891 - age 59, Collier's ...man, b Clatford Wilts. Wife Charlotte is  60 & a Shopkeeper, b Milden Hall Wilts
RG12 /  Piece: 4124 /  Folio 118 /  Page 2

1881 - age 50, Grocer, b Manton Wilts. Wife Charlotte is 50 &  b Milden Hall Wilts
RG11 /  Piece: 4984 / Folio: 79 /  Page: 31

1871 - age 40, Labourer, b Manton Wilts. Wife Charlotte is 41, b Mildenhall Wilts
Also in the house are a visiting family of ANDREWS:  John Andrews b Mildenhall Wilts and wife Sarah and dau  both born  London.
RG10 /  Piece: 4994 /  Folio: 29 /  Page: 9

Manton Village is part of the wider parish of Preshute, and Clatford is 1 mile away from Manton.

So there is certainley a growing possibility that your John WITTS is the paternal uncle of James Henry WITTS, the other WITTS family in Usworth in 1901. ie: That William WITTS is John's younger brother. But certificates will be needed to prove, I guess.

Still tryng to find:
*  John WITTS b abt 1832 in 1841, 1851 and 1861
*  Parents/older siblings  of William WITTS b abt 1845, in the 1841

You said John WITTS " must have been about 37 when he married Charlotte"
Do you know when and where he married Charlotte and what her maiden name was?

Cheers

1851: Preshute, Wiltshire
HO107 /  Piece: 1838 /  Folio: 270 /  Page: 19
Servant: John WITTS  19, unm, Farm labourer, b Preshute
In household of Farmer of 1000 acres, Robert LYNE and family, including a number of other servants.

So it looks as if John was rather, 19 or just turned 20, when he and Charlotte married in 1851.
As opposed to his being 37 in abt 1868/1869......... Perhaps, there has been some confusion with a marriage in Cirencester Goucestershire in 1868 when a MARRIAGE on freeBMD has a John WITTS and a Charlotte WOODWARD on the same page ??
