Trysten

What is bandwidth?  I have apparently exceeded my bandwidth and now have no site for contacts to view.  I have had several replies to one of my names and have referred them to the website for further information.  I have informed them they cannot see the site until March.  I am dissappointed the site is no longer available.

Bloomin eck Reg, your site is popular!   Shocked

I've upped the limit on your site so that it is back live again - your site has the highest bandwidth of any on the free RootsChat, so there's something to be proud of.  Smiley

Reg,

I forgot to explain what bandwidth was didn't I, sorry.

Bandwidth (when we're talking websites) is the total amount of data that has travelled to and from your website.

So, say if you had a single page on your website and all the bits on it came to say 50kb then if there was one view of that page the bandwidth used would be 50kb.

If there were two views of that page then the bandwidth would be 100kb... Also if you modify your webpage and upload it then it would take another 50kb.

The bandwidth that we give free is 500,000kb (500Mb or 1/2 Gb) so with a 50kb page then that's 10,000 views a month
(it's actually more than that in a way because when people revisit some bits will be stored in their cache)

On the other hand, if each time you modify a small part of your website, but are uploading the whole lot (not just the modified bit), then that will be eating up your bandwidth.

You had actually gone past your 500Mb early in the month, and upped it to 1Gb, and now you're set on a whopper 1.5Gb bandwidth which should be enough. (fingers crossed!)

Hi Trystan,

I PM'ed you yesterday to say that I couldn't see my site http://boco.rootschat.net from the office (broadband).
Instead I just get a "can't find host" message.  At home (dial-up) I have no problem.
No problems at all with www.rootschat.com, either from home or from the office

I recall seeing somewhere that RootsChat has a mirror site in Germany. Could it be that the mirror site is having a bandwidth problem.

On reflection, that can't be it either -- after all, I can see my site when I dial-up at home, and that will presumably also go through the german mirror site   Huh

Is there a way of of checking how much bandwidth has been used ??

Thanks,
Bob

PS: my logo, left, is on my site, which means I don't see that, either  Sad  Can everybody else see it  Huh

PPS: Just had a thought: I had a week off work, I wonder if somebody else used my computer and b*****ed about with the IE settings ?  I'll do a "compare & contrast" with the two machines, maybe that will tell me something !

Bob,

You can log in here with your site name (boco.rootschat.net) as username and the webspace password.
http://www.rootschat.net/cgi-bin/amanager.cgi

From there you can see the bandwidth that you have used so far (amongst other things).

49.79% usage of 50.00 MB space limit.
7.64% usage of 500.00 MB monthly bandwidth limit.

I can see your logo on the left, yes. Can other people see it?
