Owen John Lamb b1857 Dundalk, Louth
« on: Sunday 24 May 09 00:06 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to trace the birth record and parents of my great grandfather Owen John Lamb who moved to Durham England sometime around 1870-80 and joined the Durham Light Infantry.

According to the 1881 1891 1901, 1911 England census he was born c1857 in Dundalk, Louth

According to his marriage cert his father was a farmer called Michael Lamb.
When he married Isabella Bell in 1888 his father was recorded as deceased.

Family memory believes that he came from somewhere near Crossmaglen - presumably the farm was somewhere nearby.(Probably a small farm and his father Michael was a tenant farmer - if it had been large I am sure there would have been family stories about it).

Other than the name Michael I have no other information on the family - whether or not they were siblings etc.  As I cannot find any trace of any family vaguely fitting Owen's in England Census data I have to assume he came to England on his own.

I have searched through all the Irish records I can find and have found the name Michael in relation to some small farms near Mounthill and Haggardtown but I can't find a way of determining whether or not it is my ancestor.

Owen had six children to Isabella Bell who were:
Nora Mary b1889
John George b1890
Walter Edward b 1892
Robert James b1894
Thomas William b 1896-1961
Rose Eleanor b1899

Nora, Rose and John all died in early adulthood according to family memory and never married - John was killed in WWI - again family memory have not been able to catagorically verify this with military records - too many John Lambs.

Robert James Lamb married a Florence Driver and lived in Bradford, England and had at least 3 children, Frank, Stanley and Nellie.

Walter Edward no-one seems to know too much about him but believe he married.

Thomas William was my grandfather who married Mary Elizabeth Crozier (b1900)

Have you looked at Griffiths Valuation ..........................?

http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_form.php

There are two Michaels and interestingly, two Owens shown.

The survey was carried out between 1848–1864. (I have seen somewhere a narrower period for when Co Louth was surveyed, but can't remeber where!).

I knew I had seen something like this somewhere regarding the dates of the Valuations, have a look at .............http://www.deliapublications.com/More2Griffith.htm

Yes thats where I got the information about Haggardstown and Mounthill from - both Michael Lamb but no way of determining if either one is my ancestor.   I am inclined to think if it is any it is Mounthill because that is closer to Crossmaglen.

Yes Owen is a very popular name in that area - presumably after Owen Roe O'Neill an Irish nationalist in the 1600's

But thanks for your suggestion Smiley

Yes I have checked out that site and cannot find an Owen Lamb for that date - there is one for 1853 but given the sites charges it is an expensive form of elimination.

I am surprised the IFHF doesn't in the initial search give location and date so that its possible to make a judgment about whether or not it is the right ancestor's record or have an intermediary step and charge a lower amount for a search with more details like Scotland's People.

Have found a Michael Lamb marriage at about that time but the full record would not help much at this stage as I don't have any way of determining if it is the right ancestor other than the name and occupation - and I am sure at that time a farmer was a common occupation.

Thanks again for the suggestion  Smiley

Oh just realised I have not mentioned that my ancestors were Catholic I don't know if that opens up any other sources of information that I haven't thought of.

I have a checked out the Emerald Ancestor site - although that as you probably know is limited to Northern Ireland, but I get the impression talking to living family members that where my ancestors lived straddled the two countries - even though at the time they lived it was not two countries.
