Have you tried contacting the newspapers directly? They must have some sort of archive.
If you live in the area, you could  try your local library for advice.

I seem to recall that you are close to Gateshead library.  I am sure they will be able to tell you where to look.   1990 is very recent so the newspaper may well help too.  Why not ring up and ask them?
