Was Lise Mathea Moe, nee Jorgenson born round about April, 1860?   Huh

Who were her Jorgenson family in Norway? Huh

In Bremmersdorp, Swaziland, where she and Bernt Kristian Moe were married, when did their marriage take place, and where, was it at the Mission Station, and if so, which mission station?   Shocked

Cheers

Couldn't resist a 'dip' into IGI Family Search and was excited to see that Lise Mathea Jorgenson was born 26 February, 1859, at Hole Parish, Ringerike, Buskerud, Norway.   Grin

On her Death Notice in the SA Archives, I thought it strange that it was recorded that she had the same birth place as her later husband, Bernt Kristian Moe, as I knew from family folklore, that this was not the case.     Angry

My family home in South Africa, was called.......... "Ringerike", obviously after Lise Mathea Moe's, nee Jorgenson, birthplace in Norway!   Grin

She was Christianed on 26 June, 1859 at Hole Parish.

Cheers

Beverley J G Evans of USA has submitted a large Family Tree, on IGI Family Search, for Lise Mathea Moe, b. Jorgenson, going back to 1720.    Grin

AF 92-107173

Without exception all relatives were born, married, died etc, at Hole Parish, Ringerike, Buskerud, Norway.    Wink

Wonder if Beverley J G Evans is related to Lise Mathea Moe?   Huh  Perhaps the Chicago connection yet again?   Wink

Would still appreciate any help at all, especially with the questions posed in the preceeding posts?Huh

Cheers

Please will someone correct me if I am wrong, but I recall hearing that Ringerike is a group of Norwegian islands, but not sure off which coast of Norway?    Huh

Hi Danchaslyn.

Wonderful news!! Maybe we can find the original birth cert. now.

Hope you can come in contact with that Beverly Evans. You`re almost certain to be related.

Buskerud is one of the counties in Norway, and Ringerike a municipality. it`s inland. Google, Ringerike, Buskerud, Norway and you`ll find it. Ringerike is famous for it`s potatoes!!

So happy for you.

Just had a look at Family Search, someone has done a lot of work there. Lucky you.

Now if we can find some more about Bernt Kristian, it`ll be great.

Hello Grandma

Yes, it's amazing news........but, I do hope your son will be able to fill in the missing links when he gets a chance.

Have been searching the shipping, emigration lists, still no results for either Bernt Kristian Moe, or Lise Mathea Jorgenson, even when whe sent to Chicago?Huh!!!!    Huh

Also, having no luck finding anything in Swaziland about their marriage, or even the birth of their first born young son, who died on the trek to South Africa.    Undecided

Will google 'Ringerike' now.......back later

Cheers

Hello Grandma

Thank you, I googled Ringerike and how very interesting...........and it jogged my memory again!    Shocked

From the google map, I see that Hole Parish is on the coastline, SE of Ringerike, overlooking some islands.   Cool

Lise Mathea Jorgenson definitely came from Southern Norway, as we have now confirmed, and, she definitely was from one of those islands that can been seen in the water, off Hole.  Grin

I remember elderly members of the Moe family having pictures on their walls of these islands and saying these were where they originally came from in Norway,  BUT, of course, it was on the maternal Jorgenson, side!   Wink

So, I wonder if we can be more specific as to where in, or near Trondheim Bernt Kristian Moe came from?    Huh

Cheers

-"Lizzie Jorgensen" is mentioned in association with Malle Moe.

Malla and seven others (three men, four women)

 Smiley

Hello Jorose

Once again, thank you so much...........I've been away researching the Swaziland and Scandinavian Alliance Mission.

Also, tried finding BDM for Swaziland, and according to their current govt site, it was a requirement only from 1927, for BMD's to be registered, so don't think there's a possibility there of finding Bernt Kristian Moe's & Lise Mathea Jorgenson's wedding.

Bremmersdorp as given in their South African Death Records, should be Bremersdorp.  Later the name was changed to Manzini, both of which have been, and are, the capital of Swaziland.

From 1894 - 1902, probably the  most relevant period we're looking at, Bremersdorp, which was founded in 1890, was the capital of the Swaziland Protectorate as it was then known.

Cheers

Angry

Just 'lost' my whole post on the Scandinavian Alliance Mission........try again........

It was founded in 1890, by Rev Fredrik Franson ( 17 June, 1852 - 2 Aug, 1908), he was born in Pershyttan, Vastmanland, Sweden.

He and his family emigrated to the USA, where he founded the SAM, mainly sending missionaries to China, Japan, South Africa, Mongolia, India and South America.

Several name changes have taken place and it's currently known as TEAM, but I'm having difficulty downloading their current site, so if anyone can please PM me their email address, that would be great so I can write for details of their past Swaziland operations.

The connection of Malla Moe and Lizzie Jorgenson, I thought the Chicago co-incidence was more than that.  The SAM was founded in Chicago by Rev Franson, who previous to the founding date, was baptised into the Baptist Church, nr his home in Estina, Nebraska, USA.

Rev Franson sent out the first small group to Swaziland in 1892.  The mission station in Swaziland, was situated at Bulunga, don't yet know if this was close to Bremersdorp, but possibly all matters of major importance had to take place at the capital?

The land used to be owned by the Henwood Family and later the mission station was renamed, Bethel.

Cheers

Hello Grandma

Someone else might have a much better idea, but I'm thinking the only way possibly to find out details of Bernt Kristian Moe's and Lise Mathea Jorgenson's marriage (thereby giving hopefully details of their births, places of birth and parents' details), would be to try to trace the exact mission station, where they met and married, in Swaziland.    Cool

I'm assuming it is the "Bethel" Mission Station, run by the then Scandinavian Alliance, now known as T.E.A.M., at Bulunga, Swaziland?  But, I can't find email, or any contact details for T.E.A.M.Huh??    Huh

I read in one of the links from Jorose  (thank you Jorose!!), that 'one other' joined the mission staff after two of the missionaries left to be married in Durban, so am wondering if this was indeed, Bernt Kristian Moe?  It's not quite the same story though that was passed down through family folklore.

Cheers

From The SA History Society, Military History Journal, Vol 11, No 3 - 4:

When the Boer forces invaded Bremersdorp, Mr & Mrs Henwood of
Henwoods Store  (did they sell the land to SAM for Bethel Mission?),
fled south, leaving their Mr Henwood's ailing father in the store, in
the care of Malla Moe.  The store was looted by the Boers and an
enormous amount of gold sovereigns were taken, causing Mr H Snr
to have a stroke and die.  Oct, 1899.

Rev & Mrs Dawson of Bethel sent a message to Malla Moe urging her
to trek south, to safety, but she never received the message.

The Dawsons trekked to safety in Zululand.  I wonder if this is the reason
Bernt Kristian and Lise Mathea Moe trekked to Zululand also?   Huh

The SAM Mission was at SIHLUTSE, near Bulungu, Swaziland. They had
established Bethel Mission there in in 1891.

Cheers
