Hello
Seeking help in tracing my family, in Norway.
Bernt Christian MOE, married Marthe ?. I know Bernt and Marthe came from opposite ends of Norway, one from the 'south' and one, from the 'north'. they may have been born in the late 1850's, or 1860's?
When Marthe was a late teenager, she worked as an 'au pair' in Chicago, for a wealthy American family.
Sometime after her return to Norway, she and Bernt met and married, and emigrated to Southern Africa, as missionaries in the Lutheran Church. This may have been round about the late 1880's or 1890's.
Have no details of their voyage, but according to family folklore, they probably disembarked at the Tugela River, in Zululand, or another river in Zululand, where they trekked overland to Swaziland.
Would appreciate any info at all on this family, especially from where in Norway they originated, and their dates of births, marriage, voyage details etc.?
Cheers

Hello
As per IGI, Bernt Christian MOE 12 November 1857, not sure if this is a marriage, or a birth?
Verdal, Nord Trondelag, Norway
Could this perhaps be the right Bernt?
Cheers

Hello Jorose
We meet again........thank you!
For the past 45 minutes since your post, I've painstakingly loaded up the excellent site you linked and reached as far as 79 possible Moes during the possible appropriate years, emigrating from Norway.
My internet connection failed me twice............after I'd found a 'Mons Moe' and a 'Marius Moe', neither of them being the right ones.
It would greatly help if I knew where Bernt Christian and Marthe Moe were living in Norway, before they emigrated to Southern Africa.
Perhaps some kind RC member with better internet connection than I currently enjoy will be able to find them on the Census lists?
Cheers

It would help a lot if we could work out where they originated from in Norway-- did they spend the rest of their lives in Africa or move elsewhere? Did they have any children who were born in Norway? Are there any records of the children that might show Martha's maiden name?
I did find a reference to a Miss Malla Moe who was in Swaziland in 1894 with the "Scandinavian Alliance Mission" http://www.wheaton.edu/bgc/archives/GUIDES/280.htm#3 - this is a biography of her. She also had connections to Chicago.

Hi Danchaslyn.
My son found a Bernt Moe on the 1865 census. could possibly be Bernt Christians father.
Bernt Moe, b. 1832. occ. Baker Serine, wife, b. 1833 Ebertine, dau. b. 1858 Berstrand, son. b.1863 John Bye, visitor or lodger, b 1850
Also found the christening of Ebertine Serina Moe who was b. Jan.8, 1858 and christened Apr. 4. Parents were Bernt Moe and Serina Sørensdatter Bye, Two of the witnesses, were Einar and Berith Moe. Also Johannes Sørensen and Sirene Eriksdatter. Erik Sørensen Bye and Julianne(?) Moe
Possibly Einar and Berith were Bernt Moe parents while Johannes Sørensen and Sirene were parents to Sirene Sørensdatter Bye.(Moe)
I,m ssuming this is correct, by going after the naming pattern in Norway.
Also found Einar Moe on the 1865 census
Einar Moe, b. 1798. Berith Andreasdatter wife, b. 1800 Andreas, son b. 1844 Maria Finne ?? dau. b. 1839 Not sure if Maria was a daughter or daughter-in-law.
All these were born in Verdal and Verdalsøren, North Trøndelag.
He has promised to keep on searching so keep your fingers crossed.
Cheers.
Mary

Hello Jorose
That is SO interesting..............as you say, it would help so much if we knew exactly where each of them were from in Norway............one relative could tell me, if I could find her address, then we have the language difficulty, one of the reasons our correspondence stopped.
On the Swaziland trail, I know that both Bernt & Marthe were sent out as missionaries (the rest of their lives they were Lutherans, so assume as Lutheran missionaries), to Swaziland, from Norway, to 'relieve', four Scandinavian ladies, who were the sole survivors, on a large mission station, which previously had comprised both men, and women missionaries. Their colleagues had died from ? (an African disease), was told what, when I was a very small child!
I think, that Bernt and Marthe were married in Norway, before they left for Swaziland, but it's possible not, so, on the passenger lists it might be as Bernt Christian Moe and Marthe who? ???or, Bernt, on his own?
When they eventually 'rescued' the Mission, however long after, (maybe three years later?), "head office" back in Norway decided the Mission would close, so Bernt, Marthe and the four other lady missionaries, had to trek south, by ox-wagon to South Africa.
On this trip, tragically their first son, age about 2yrs, wandered away from the campsite, while the oxen were being outspanned and camp set up, ate some wild berries, and was found dying.
This tells me that Bernt & Marthe, either met and married in Norway before they left Norway for Swaziland, or, they met on the Mission Station, which I think, from family folklore is also highly likely!
Your link is fascinating, as always, Jorose, thank you.
Cheers

Hello Jorose
Bernt and Marthe Moe, arrived in Zululand, from Swaziland, where they lived for the rest of their lives. Haven't yet got their death dates.
As accurately as possible, I think, they had four further children, all born near Tugela Ferry, Zululand, South Africa, possibly between 1898 - 1904:
Karen Moe - 1898?
Fillip Moe - 1900
Johanne Moe - 1902
Lizzie Moe - 1904
Both Karen and Johanne never married. Fillip married Edith Constance Aitken. Lizzie married Gustav Hallstrom, from Sweden, in Durban, South Africa. All died, in and around Durban, South Africa.
Cheers

Hello Grandma
Thank you SO much to both you, and to you son!
I think you and he have worked out the Moes very well, it all seems pretty straightforward so far, fingers crossed, by some miracle we will somehow find out what Marthe's maiden surname was?
It would be thrilling to find mention of Bernt Christian on one of the Censuses, with Bernt and Serine as his parents???
I did see something somewhere, possibly on IGI which may date Bernt Christian's birth to round about 1857, but think that is to early, so it could perhaps be his father Bernt's?
Cheers

Hello Jorose
Having now had time to read the full precis from the link you sent on the biography of Petra Malena Moe, known for the rest of her life, as Malla Moe, what an amazing lady she is!
And, as you say, she also had connections to Chicago. I believe its possible Malla Moe was a close relative of Bernt Christian Moe. Which of the two went out first to Swaziland, I don't know, I assume Bernt, and that it was a different, earlier Mission that he 'rescued'.
After he and Marthe and son and staff trekked south to Zululand, another mission must have been set up again.
Cheers

Hi Danchaslyn.
Looked up Hafslo, where Malla Moe was born and it,s a fair way away from Verdal, where we are assuming Bernt Christian was born. It,s in a different county all together. Though who knows, they still could be connected.

Hello Grandma
Thank you for looking up Hafslo............think that all these folk's attendance at their church is the mutual key, don't you?
Their recruitment, either for Chicago, or to go out to Swaziland? I feel sure that Marthe ?, could have been in the same congregation as Malla Moe, in Norway?
Have you possibly had a chance to read the whole link that Jorose posted about their mission work?
Cheers

Hello Jorose
In answer to your question about having any documentation for Bernt Christian Moe, the only item I have, and it is in storage, is his South African Naturalization Certificate, for the whole family, to become South African Citizens.
Unfortunately it didn't give the names of the parents, of either Bernt Christian Moe, or Marthe Moe, nee ?.
If only!!
Cheers
