Renton, Durham?
« on: Monday 25 May 09 21:00 UTC (UK) »

Is there anywhere in Durham called Renton?  Also transcribed in 1901 as Rexton, but could also be Benton or Penton.

First thought was that in the 1901 perhaps it was Rainton misheard or misspelled but the 1911 gives place of birth as Middle Renton, Durham.

I can’t find anywhere close on genuki but wondered whether there was a place or an area known locally by one of these names.

Any suggestions welcome

Christine

Most likely Rainton and Middle Rainton.  See the Durham County Record Office Place Names Index

Thanks for that Stan.  We thought Rainton but when the man himself wrote Renton in the 1911 we decided to double check.

That weblink is now on my ever-growing list!
