I would like to know more about my gt grandfathers service in the First World War.
He was living in Barrow Hill, Staveley at the time of the war and served initially in the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters before being transferred later into the 12th Battalion.
I know that he was wounded twice as he is mentioned in newspaper reports of his brothers death in the Northants Regiment. His service record has not survived.
He went over to France in July 1915.
I believe any reports for this area would be in the Derbyshire Times. If anyone is researching local newspapersfor the ancestors during the war please could you keep an eye out for any reports concerning George Cockings. Any entry is most likely to be between July 1915 and May 1917.
I am not local and I am not going to be able to visit in the near future and would be grateful for any help.
