Sykes Gardens, Brighouse
« on: Tuesday 26 May 09 08:42 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find out who established an 1872 pleasure gardens at Brighouse known as Sykes Gardens.  My reading indicates that they were established by a Mr Sykes, but there are several candidates, and I wondered if the 1871 census entries for the following might give any clue:

John Sykes b 1811
Jonathan/Johnathan Sykes b 1817
George Sykes b 1823
Richard Sykes b 1828
Charles Sykes/Sikes b 1843
Smith Sykes b 1845

All will be listed as born in Lightcliffe or in Brighouse.

I think that whoever established Sykes Gardens in 1872 would already have been gardening in a fairly big way in Brighouse in 1871.

Any lookups, help or suggestions would be appreciated.  Incidentally, many of these people were related to the famous Victorian singer Mrs Susan Sunderland [born Susannah Sykes]

Hi Malcolm

I've just got to go out for a while but will look these up for you when I get back - unless someone else has already done it of course!

Hello Malcolm

I've got the following in 1871:

At Granny Hall Hipperholme

Ann Sykes 50 wife
Smith Sykes 26 son, widower, stone delver
Hannah Sykes 16 dau. dressmaker
Ingham Sykes 13 grandson, farmer's boy
Jane Sykes 5 grand dau

At Bleak House Lightcliffe
Jonathan Sykes 54 gardener
Martha Sykes 54 wife
John Sykes 20 son, gardener
James Sykes 12 son

At Brookfoot Lane Southowram
William Oates 63 stone dresser
Hannah Oates 55 wife
Charles Sykes 28 son in law gardener
Grace Sykes 28 dau
John W Sykes grandson
(Checking with 1861, this Charles is the son of John and his then wife Martha - they are at Spring Gardens Lightcliffe and John is a gardener)

I don't see George in 1871, and Richard is at Station Yard Barnsley with his wife and family - he is a foreman railway porter.

Hope this helps

Anne:

Thanks very much.

Just to help me sort them out a bit, when you say

Checking with 1861, this Charles is the son of John and his then wife Martha

do you mean the John [hubby of Ann] who was 60 in 1871, or the Jonathan [hubby of Martha] who was 54 in 1871?

Regards

I've been looking at the 1841 image page again. Fascinated to see that the Sunderlands and the Sykes all live near enough together to be on the same page!

Susannah Sunderland and her husband Henry live a couple of doors from John and his wife, and there are more Sunderlands near. Also James and Hannah Sykes, both aged 50, presumably the parents of Susanna (and John?)

Yes. Anne.  Susannah [Mrs Susan Sunderland: 1819-1905] and John [b 1811] were 2 of the 10 children of James [1782-1846] and Hannah [1785-1855].

Thanks again

Hi

I know this is a long shot (not to mention unbelievably lazy) but my granddad, James Sykes, was born in Brighouse on 4 July 1913. I understand that he emigrated to New Zealand when he was about 8 years old with his sisters after his parents, who ran a pub (The Red Lion?) died.

I'm now in the UK and hoping to unearth some long lost relatives and it looks like you know quite a bit about the Sykeses from Brighouse.  Any tips on how to find info on the previous generations would be gratefully received.

HI  Kiwikat

Do you have any idea as to the names of James Parents or the sister he came to NZ with?

I'm only asking as I've found a James Sykes born 1913 going to NZ in 1927 but with parents and a sister

here is the family unit on that pass' list

James Sykes bn circa 1867 Occ Funeral Dealer
Mary Ann Sykes bn circa 1868
James (jnr)Sykes bn circa 1913 - student
Miss Rena Sykes bn crica 1906

last known address 337 Manchester Rd Hudds

Now jumping back to find thei family in the 1901 census there is a fmily that fits minus James jnr and Rena of course.

street address 48 Park Road Brighouse
James Sykes 1867 Brighouse Occc Refreshments House Keeper
Mary Ann Sykes 1869 Brighouse
Florence Maud Sykes 1890 Brighouse
Winnifred Sykes bn circa 1900 Brighouse
William Sykes bn circa 1892 Adopted son bn Brighouse

Now without giving 2 much away this family complete with a daughter called Rena right birth place do show up in the next census after the 1901 and james occupation in that one is simply stated as Landlord on this one they're living at 20 Police Street Brighouse.

So could this indeed be them and the fact was that the parents did survive and moved to NZ also......

I had a look through the pubs in my Calderdale Companion website, and there is a James Sykes as landlord at the Empress of India pub in Police Street, Brighouse in 1909

How very very interesting - it seems that you can't believe everything you're told!

This indeed looks like the right family as according to my grandfather's birth certificate he was born at 20 Police Street and he's the son of a Mary Ann and a James.  I might have to do some more digging at the NZ end to see how we got it wrong.

Still, I must be related to some of those Sykes' in Yorkshire!

... and, in 1887, there was a James Sykes landlord of the Grove pub in Elland Road, Brighouse which is a continuation of Park Road.  Could that be he [aged 20] or his father?

Well I guess it could be either - I'll have to get some further birth certificates to find occupations of the previous generations.

Interesting that James Sykes (father) had changed his occupation to "Funeral Dealer" by the time of emigration to NZ.  Perhaps he didn't think New Zealanders drank?
