Hi Jan

Having had a look at your (excellent  Grin) website, it confirmed the James you're after is the one in Abbey Burgh, Paisley in 1861 (b abt 1832 and a  silk weaver) and in 1871 (born abt 1828 an a weaver) - with his wife Lilias MANWELL and their family. They had married 1854 in Paisley.

I wondered if you had since  found James'  death certificate  to see what that says about his age and parents?

Cheers

Twenty years is not too long...in those times! From beginning to end of child rearing for mothers, it was about the average. Can't see a marriage for Malcolm and Elizabeth on IGI, this would help to set the time frame.

Is this your James' OPR marriage, actual extract:

JAMES MCFARLANE
Parents:MALCOLM MCFARLANE and ELIZABETH MCLEOD
Marriages:LILIAS MANUEL on 10 SEP 1854  Abbey (Paisley), Renfrew

Have you checked the newly released OPR burial registers for Malcolm and Elizabeth? The ones that I have seen for Paisley have been very informative.

Yes, they are now on SP. Useful to read the notes on the site. They are patchy, some areas better than others.

I've just been looking. There is one entry showing for a Malcom (no 'l') McFarlane in 1848 in Abbey Parish. No other info available. As always with OPRs, a lucky dip. You don't know what's there until you look unfortunately.

In that period, names as you know can vary in terms of spelling, or simply the way they were written down on the Registers (or transcriptions from these Registers if the writing is not clear).  That looks promising  Smiley

That actual extract entry for William in 1812. There is also a further submitted entry for his birth with mother Elizabeth showing as MCLONG  Roll Eyes

Using just the batch code of C119611 on IGI, look what pops up:

1. JOHN MCFARLANE Christening: 08 DEC 1808 Middle Church, Paisley
2. MALCOLM MACFARLANE Christening: 06 SEP 1810 Middle Church, Paisley
3. JAMES MACFARLANE Christening: 02 APR 1815 Middle Church, Paisley

William's christening would fit in 1812. Mother in the entries above shows as McLorg/McClorg

Monica

Added: Just realised there is a James showing in the list above. If we have the right family for James born c. 1832, likely the one in 1815 died and name re-used.

Hi Monica
unless I have James birth date wrong because I was only told by someone else that he was born in 1832
I know for sure that he died about 1878 and I thought that was a bit young even in those days( unless he was born in 1815) and his wife never died to 1923 lived to a grand old age of 93
that make him 17 years older than his wife and that makes sense
I will need to put James death cert at the top of my list from SP
Thanks for all your help Monica and taking to the time to look up all that info
Cheers Jan

Jan

I think you will find his birth year is a +/-, with 1832 being on the plus side perhaps. The 1861 census shows his born c. 1832 but the 1871 census shows c. 1828. I can't easily see him with any confidence in 1841/51.
