Is anyone able to look up the marriage of Charlotte Bray (b 1807) to William Rolls at St Mary Newington? The marriage was 08 Mar 1835. I cannot find a baptism for her in Somerset and need to know her parents. Alternatively, a point in the right direction, to find someone who can, would be very welcome.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat
Unfortunately - fathers names were not shown on marriage entries prior to 1.7.1837 when Civil Registration was introduced. Mothers names never appear on British marriage certs
1851 census shows her b Bishop Lidiard Somerset but she is not at all helpful on the 1861/1871 as she just shows "Somerset"

Thank you for the reply - I did not expect it so quickly. A few of the Somerset parrish marriage records - even the early ones, show the father. In this case, I think I shall have to put 2 and 2 together and hope I haven't made 5. Charlotte's daughter Mary is shown as living with Isaac and Betty Bray in bishop's Lydeard, in the 1841 census. In 1851, she is back living with Mum in Lambeth, before marrying Joseph (Bray!) in 1855 in Lambeth - Esher Road Congregationalist Chapel. If my deductions are correct she married her first cousin. (They were both living with Isaac and Betty in 1841).

Hi
You may get lucky if somebody is able to look the marriage up for you but it looks a possibility that Isaac & Betty were her parents. I have often wished the 1841 census was as informative as later censuses. If Mary's relationship had been shown as grand daughter it's a lot more positive

Many thanks for the suggestions - am waiting to see if I can get someone at London Metropolitan archives to access the original register. Further to above - can anyone find the death of JESSE BRAY most likely in Surrey c. 1835, but no later than 1850? It's typical that the part of the family that I really need to clarify, if proving the most difficult.

There is only one Jesse Bray death on freebmd between 1837-1850
Jesse Bray March qtr 1848 Taunton Volume 10 Page 376
But there was a Jesse Bray born in Taunton Sept qtr 1847 who does not appear on the 1851 census so it could be his death
If he died pre-1837 it would need a search of parish registers unless any transcriptions are available locally

IGI shows parents as Henry & Mary and he was christened in Chipstead

Hi - thanks for the replies. From what everyone is saying, I now think he must have died pre 1937. His son Joseph was born in 1832 - he thought he was born in London, but it was Bishops Lydeard in Somerset. Most of the brothers and sisters of Jesse b 1797 moved to Lambeth around 1800. I can find them all on the census, but not Jesse. There are no records of his burial that I can find in Somerset and Joseph was back living with the Grandparents in 1841, although that doesn't mean Jesse had died - but it's looking more and more likely. He was stated as deceased in 1855, when Joseph married in St Mary Newington. My thanks

Thank you That is wonderful. I am just hoping someone might come across Jesse's death, but I'm not holding my breath. All the family seemed to go to Lambeth, so he's probably recorded as being buried somewhere (maybe Lambeth St Mary - just a guess) between 1832 and 1837. Once again my thanks.
