Ebenezer Hayward Croydon

Hi
I'm trying to find the marriage of Ebenezer Hayward who was born in Croydon in 1834.

Acording to the 1871 census he was married to Harriot aged 21 born Cropthorne Surrey and they had 2 children, Helen aged 1 and Spencer aged 3 months. However I cant find a marriage. The only Ebenezer Hayward I can find is in 1868 in Greenwich, but not to a Harriot.

I believe Harriot died before 1881 as Ebenezer is a widower in this census.

Can anyone find the marriage?

Having trouble finding Spencer's birth - the Spencer Howard Hayward b. in Brentford shown in freebmd is not him.
Then in 1881 if this is the same Ebenezer neither Helen nor Spencer are shown but there is another son, Ebenezer, aged 16 (actually a mistype and aged 10?)

There is a Spencer Gammon Hayward who married in 1896 in Croydon, and in the 1861 census a Harriet Gammon, aged 10, living in Sussex with her father Spencer. She was b. Maresfield, Sussex.

I think this might be the same Harriet who married in 1875 Charles James Bush.  He is shown on the 1871 census with a wife Emma (may have died in 1874 as Emma Jane Bush, aged 36) and children including son Francis, 7-- and on the 1881 with wife Harriet, son Francis, 17, and Ellen Bush, 11 (Helen from 1871?) and Charles (Spencer?) aged 10.

Births on freebmd:
Ellen Gammon, b. Mar 1870 quarter, Croydon
Ebenezer Spencer Gammon, b. Mar 1871 quarter, Croydon.

I would suggest that what happened is that Ebenezer and Harriot/Harriet never married, that they split - he taking care of the son Ebenezer Spencer, she taking care of the daughter Helen, and that she then remarried to Charles James Bush.  With divorce generally too expensive for the common man, "widow" or "widower" was a often used polite fiction in these cases.

Thanks for all that, it is certainly something to consider and work on, as the dates etc fit. It would also explain why I cant find a marriage or a death for a Harriot Hayward before 1881. This is only a side branch of my tree so at the moment I wont be sending for birth certificates
