This looks promising
1881 Census England Herefordshire Leominster RG11/2604/64/4 18 Corn Square
In the household of Thomas LLOYD, master currier and his wife Harriet, nieces Elizabeth and Catherine BRACE,
STAREE Sophia Boarder Unmarr 49 London St Giles
There is a death registered in Leominster in 1908 for a Sophia Ellen STAIRE aged 75. This might be yours given that she was in Leominster in 1881. Now all we have to do is find her on the 1901 and the 1891.

Okay, this is tying it up nicely now :-
1871, 1891 and 1901 Census sees Sophia still with Thomas and Harriet LLOYD in Leominster.
So many of William and Jane STARIE's children did not marry, especially the girls. I have found them on many of the later Census. Did you want any more information on any of them?

Hi again Liz
Here is Emma in 1861 - a widow as expected as you say her husband Richard Valentine TURNER died 1860. Looks like they did have two children. She is at 24 Grafton Square - her maiden Sisters were at Nr 10 in same census and at Nr 17 in 1871!
1861: Clapham Surrey Ref: RG9/ Piece 368- Folio158- Pg 31 Address: 24 Grafton Square Head: Emma TURNER 46, widow, Fundholder. b Lambeth Surrey Dau: Emma J TURNER 15, Scholar, b Lambeth Surrey Son: William R E TURNER 9, Scholar, b Lambeth Surrey Sister: Elizabeth ARMITAGE 44, widow, Fundholder, b Lambeth Surrey Neice: Edith ARMITAGE 7, b Hythe Kent Servant: Elizabeth ASHLEY 26, unm, House Servant, b Maldon Essex Servant: Ann MILLER 20, unm, House Servant, b Felthorpe Norfolk
Elizabeth could be a sister in law maybe? Not had her come up as REEVES sibling before? did we?
But - going back, here are the TURNERS in 1851:
1851: Kennington First, Lambeth, Surrey Ref: HO107/ Piece 1573 - Folio 335- Pg 36 Address: 9 Dorset Terrace Head: Richard V TURNER 42, Stock & Share Broker, b Lambeth Surrey Wife: Emma TURNER 36, b Kennington Surrey Dau: Emma Jane TURNER 5 & half years, b Clapham Road Serv: Caroline WOOD 27, unm, Serv Cook, b Kingston Surrey Serv: Fanny BEALE 23, unm, Serv, b Clapham Surrey
BIRTHS: children - probable: Emma Jane TURNER - Lambeth - Sep Qtr 1845 William Richard Eaton TURNER - Lambeth - Jun Qtr 1852
And here is Emma and son in 1871 - visiting her brother Herbert! I must say this family must have known you'd be looking all these years later - all very nicely visiting each other thru the years!
1871: Mortlake, Surrey Ref: RG10/ Piece 870- Folio 57- Pg 22 Address Fernbank, East Sheen Head: Herbert W REEVES 43, Solicitor, b Lambeth Surrey Wife: Elizabeth REEVES 27, b Chelsea, Middlesex Son: Herbert K REEVES 5, b Richmond Surrey Son: Hugh W REEVES 4, b Mortlake Surrey Dau: Emily B REEVES 3, b Mortlake Surrey Son: Edward REEVES 2, b Mortlake Surrey Visitor: Emma TURNER 56, wid, b Lambeth Surrey Visitor: William R TURNER 19, unm, Articled Clerk & Solicitor, b Lambeth Surrey Servant; Hannah ALGAR 34, unm, b Teb?ling, Essex, Servant: Eliza POWTER 40, unm, b Ware, Herts Servant: Harriet C GREEN 23, unm, b Ware, Herts Servant: Maria L NOBLE 30 unm, b Putney Surrey Servant: Isabel PIMBLE 10, b Halling, Kent

Hi again Liz
Regarding the TURNER's
I can find the son of Richard V TURNER and Emma REEVES :-- William Richard Eaton TURNER - in 1881, 1891 and 1901.....he seems quite intriguing!
MARRIAGE: Sep Qtr 1879 - RD: Newton Abbot (Devon) William Richard E TURNER and Edith Helen ATKINSON
1881: Battersea, Ward 4, London Ref:RG11/ Piece 645-Folio 94- Pg16 Address: 1 Sisters Terrace, Lavender Hill Head: William Rich'd Eaton TURNER 29, Solicitor, b Clapham Surrey Wife: Edith H E TURNER 20, b Ives Bucks Son: Richard M A E TURNER, 6 months, b Battersea Surrey Serv: Elizabeth M J DODERIDGE23, unm, Nurse, b Newton Abbot, Devon Serv: Ellen DIBBLES 21, unm, Cook, b Stogember?? Somerset Serv: Eliza Prowse READSTONE 17, unm, Housemaid, b Bideford, Devon
1891: Wimbledon, Surrey Ref: RG12/ Piece 604- Folio 119- Pg 63; Address: 13 Walpole Rd Head: William EATON TURNER 39, Author, b Clapham, Surrey Wife: Edith EATON TURNER 30, b Ivor, Bucks Son: Richard EATON TURNER 10, Scholar, b Lavender Hill, Surrey Son: Godfrey EATON TURNER 9, Scholar, b Lavender Hill, Surrey Serv: Caroline PITKIN 51, wid? marr?*, Domestic House Keeper, b Chesham, Bucks Visitor: Carrie A PITKIN 12, School Girl, b Chesham Bucks * Mark thru Caroline's marital status, cannot make out - but don't think it's single.
1901: Bedford St Paul, (Bedford & Kempston), Bedfordshire Ref: RG13/ Piece 1489- Folio151- Pg 6 Address: 58 Adelaide Square Head: William R E TURNER 49, Author (works on own account, at home), b Clapham Surrey Wife: Edith H E TURNER 40, b Ivor Bucks Son: Richard M A E TURNER 20, b Lavender Hill, Surrey Nephew: Raymond F M ATKINSON 12, b Bedford Park, Middlesex Servant: Elizabeth M SINFIELD 14, General Domestic Servant, b Bedford, Beds
The way these Census are written, - with Eaton written in full before Turner for each of them in 1891 and E before Turner for each of them in 1881, 1901 - makes me think they were "double-barrelling" the suname as EATON TURNER in their daily lives! On the Census is is all written in Title Case, so can't be sure if I'm right ot not!
So much for you to work with! You lucky thing If after you've compared notes you need any more of these REEVES and their etc's looked up specifically, just shout out!
Cheers AMBLY

I rather think I'm one of the great-great grand-children of Richard Valentine Turner (the one area of doubt being that RMAE Turner's (my grandfather) brother was Geoffrey, not Godfrey but can imagine it's quite difficult to read census results sometimes).
If it's any help to your research though, an elderly cousin (around her 70s in the late 1960s) called Sybil Reeves would occasionally visit us as children, although I know little about her apart from the fact that she was unmarried. My siblings and I have a Victorian Noah's ark (presumably a Reeves family one) that is enscribed to us from her. She was apparently rather fearsome.
Also, Geoffrey fell in love with one of his New Zealand cousins in the 1930s/1940s. However, I think Helen's maiden name was Atkinson, so might not be relevant.
In any case, my family has been very interested by the census results, so just wanted to pass on my thanks.

Hi Liz, I'm Mike Cole and I found your chat. I also noticed I was referenced! (very flattering). I wanted to mention a couple of corrections though. The sources of the information quoted were not "non conformist register for surry". They were from pages of a family bible. The other item was Ernest Starie's middle name wasn't Pember, it was Ponder. Ernest was my great grandfather. My Mum's maiden name is Starie. I have some additional information on the Pember family, but you might have it already, but I would be interested in any information that you might have. I also have Starie information you might be interested in. I only have a 14 day trial membership to this site, but if would like to contact me my email is mikec at quicklinks.on.ca. Perhaps I could get your email and I will send you the other information that I mentioned. Take care, Mike
