Bennett, Eustace and Asekeller
« on: Tuesday 26 May 09 12:49 UTC (UK) »

Looking for anyone that might know or heard the name Asekeller.
I have an Ellen Bennett born C1850 in Berkshire, Parents William Bennett and Ann Eustace. She came to Australia year unknown and married in 1899 to Ephraim Mansfield. She was a widow and married under the name Asekeller. I can't find any previous marriage or even a death for her and Ephraim. The name Asekeller doesn't seem to exist so maybe its an error on the certificate. Would anyone have an idea of what this name could or should be. I've tried all different ways of spelling but still nothing.

Any help greatly appreciated

can you confirm any date /birthplace from census?

Berkshire is a bit vague..
There are 'local' names a bit like that though

Only Ellen Bennett I see in 1851 census with those parents is Cheshire..

1861 shows one in Bicester (oxfordshire)

Where did the Berkshire info come from?

Hi Nola,

Welcome to Rootschat Smiley
We will all try to help you as much as possible.

Where in Australia did she marry? Which State?

Is it possible for you to cut/paste and post the part of the marriage cert. that shows her maiden name/and previously married name?

Hi Trish

Thanks for the offer but to save you time I have searched the BDM for NSW and had lookups for other states. Have searched all shipping records I can think of, cemetery records etc but to no avail. Maybe they went back to England but Ephraim's family was still in Australia but can't say where Ellen's family was. I'm at a loss to where to look next.

Regards

Hi Nola

I have found some bits which might fit - though your Ellen seems to have been a bit spareing with the truth,  particularly about her age Wink

She also seems to have got the spelling of her mothers maiden name slightly wrong,  there is a marriage on FreeBMD

Marriages Sep 1837
BENNETT  William    Abingdon  6 155
EUSTICE  Ann     Abingdon  6 155

N.B. Abingdon is the registration district not the place - it covers several Berkshire parishes.

I have found what I think is this couple in 1851 in Garford, Berks

1851 Garford

William Bennett     41
Ann Bennett    30
Hellen Bennett    10
Eliza Bennett    6
Alfred Bennett    4
James Bennett    2

Job Eustice a 57 year old widower is the next household

I think 10 year old Hellen is possibly 'your' Ellen'  according to the IGI she was baptised as Ellen 2nd Aug 1840 in Garford,  but this would make her 10 years older than she said at her second marriage.  Cheesy

I think I have found 14 year old Alfred in 1861 lodgeing with another household in Garford

and I think William the father is in Chilton with sons James aged 12 & Elijah aged 17,  he is given as a widower,  but I can't see the 2 girls at the moment.

Perhaps knowing Ellen is possibly a few years older than she owns up to might widen the search enough to find her previous marriage  Undecided
