SMITH George Edward born Hastings ca 1864
« on: Tuesday 26 May 09 15:17 UTC (UK) »

Looking for any information on a George Edward SMITH dob 22 Mar 1864 [according to the 1901 Canadian census]. This census does not give his year of entry to Nova Scotia.

He went to Nova Scotia went with Charles Henry SMITH [who on WW1 attestation papers said he was born in Yorkshire & also on 1901 census said he went to Nova Scotia in 1889] who may or may not have been a brother; they may or may not have been orphans in fact their names may not even have been SMITH [the clerk originally wrote 'SHAW' on George's marriage papers in then crossed it out & put SMITH].  Family legend has it that they may have got into trouble in England [stealing chickens] so ran away to Canada. They may have chosen SMITH as a name when it was neither of their names!! They appear to have stayed in contact in Canada.

I found passport applications 2 days apart for a G SMITH & Chas SMITH for Jun 1889. Could this be them?

On his marriage papers George said he was the son of Simeon a livery stable keeper & Caroline. on the 1881 census I can only find a Simeon SHAW with a wife Caroline & suitable occupation but they have no son George. By 1891 this Simeon is a widower, still with no son George.

This is all a bit airy-fairy isn't it? I am trying to help a friend in Canada & she has been trying for some time to find Charles' roots. The information is scanty & probably not reliable, but if anyone has a George Edward SMITH or Charles Henry SMITH of the right age, I'd been pleased to hear from them. Also if anyone can think of any resources I can research...

Many thanks, Josey

FreeBMD has the birth of a George Smith, Jan/Feb/Mar 1864, Hastings, without the middle name

.... but that is prob the one that comes up in 1871 with parents Thomas and Margaret

Thanks but I think that is one I had spotted & discarded. It may be that the two lads/men changed their names when going to Canada but I don't think George would have made up his parents names.

It is possible either Charles or George had a sister Maud born 1882 in Hastings, who married a Swiss man Adolphe MARTI. Even more 'if's & 'possibly's ;-)

Thanks for looking, Josey
