tracing anticedents
« on: Tuesday 26 May 09 15:53 UTC (UK) »

I am Ian Hamilton, and I am tracing roots back through my family which includes Hamilton,Grieve,Cairns, and Corrie. Cairns is OK, but Corrie ends up in Kelton with the census of 1871 of Helen Corrie and her son James Corrie aged 19 at that time living in St Andrews Street.  My father was called James Corrie Hamilton - hence the Corrie name from his mother.  My middle name is Badon, but I don't know why as it is unusually spelt.

Any Help??

Unfortunately, the Census of 1871 only gives the married name. However, it does list her age, as 56, and was born in Kirkpatrick, Kirkpatrickshire.  The age of her son at the time of the census was 19, and listed as James Corrie.

Hi Ian and Welcome to Rootschat  Smiley

I see on the 1871 that Helen was b. Kirkpatrick (could be Kirkpatrick Fleming or Durham ) and James was b. Parton.

I'll see if I can find anything about them for you.

I think that I've found Helen's death cert - 2nd April 1892. Castle Douglas, Kelton  Aged 79.

She was the widow of John Corrie, blacksmith. Her parents were - John McCartney, farmer and Sophia, maiden surname, Wilson. Both deceased.

Son James Corrie was the informant.

In 1851,  before James's birth:

Knock Vennie, Parton

878 ED 3 Page 18

Corrie
John, 41, blacksmith, b. Parton
Helen, 37, b. Kirkpatrick Durham
John, 10
Agnes, 8
Nathaniel, 7
Sophia, 5

all children b. Parton

I have the Parton MIs and will see if I can find anything on John. I also have the Kirkparick Durham MIs and will check for the McCartneys

There is  submitted entry on the IGI for the baptism of John Corrie, 18 Dec 1809, Parton.

Father - Nathaniel Corrie

This is confirmed in the OPRs on SP.

If Helen and John married in Parton, they might not show up as some of the 1820-30s entries are missing (my grt grt grandparents married there circa 1830 and the session clerk told me that the records had been lost).

Hel(l)en's bpt is recorded in Kirkpatrick Durham on 12 Dec 1813. Parents as stated on death cert - John McCartney and Sophia Wilson

The following children of John Corrie and Hellen McCartney are shown as baptised in Parton:

10 Sept 1839 Janet
1 Nov 1840 John

Not sure about the others listed on the 1851 - possibly missing registers or baptised elsewhere/none C of Scotland.

It looks very much as if John Corrie's mother was a Janet:

1841
Smithy Croft, Parton
878 Ed 3 P 6

Corrie

Nathaniel, 75, Blacksmith
Janet, 70
Miller
James, 13
Jane, 10
Grizel, 7
Nathaniel, 20, blacksmith

on the previous page (5) , same address:

Corrie

John, 30, blacksmith
Helen, 25
John, 7 months
David Haugh, 15, apprentice smith

All b. Kirkcudbrightshire .

Unfortunately,  no relationships were given on the 1841 and ages 15 and over were rounded down to the nearest  5 year age grouping.

I'm starting to get very interested in your family now - my ancestors would have known them as they lived in the same parish and they probably shod my 3 x grtgrandfather's horses  Smiley

Also, in a letter he wrote in the 1830s, my 3x mentioned a John Curry/Corry - he wasn't very good at spelling so it might possibly have been yours  Grin

I've not found any direct MIs for the Corries in Parton but the Kirkpatrick Durham MIs have a whole lot of McCartneys, including this one of Hellen's parents and which might be relevant to your middle name:

John McCartney d 8 Sept 1860. Aged 73.
In Memory of wife Sophia Wilson, d. Kirklandhill 18 May 1843, aged 50...............
son James d. Castle Douglas 14 Dec 1872, aged 57 (his wife Susan Bodden d. Castle Douglas 28 March 1920, aged 72)

I'm still reading through the McCartney entries - there are many!

 Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Found Nathaniel Corrie in Kirkpatrick Durham. It will take me a while to transcribe. The Corrie's seem to have lived K Durham, Parton and other parishes - John Corrie and Helen McCartney are mentioned.

You're in luck!

Yes Gadget,  I'm listening with amazement at what you have been able to do for Ian, and wishing with great envy that I was able to get comparable info on my Scottish ancestors.  Well done!

Hi Nick  Smiley

what part of Scotland do your ancestors come from  - added - just looked at your list!

I've still got some more - I hope this is what Ian wanted  Undecided

John McCartney and Sophia Wilson married Kirkpatrick Durham in April 1812. It looks as if Hellen might have been their first child. If they used the traditional naming conventions, then Sophia's mother might well have been a Hellen.

On the 1841 (Kirkland Hill, Kirkpatrick Durham), she is listed as being born Kirkcudbrightshire 1791-1796 but I've not found a bpt record for her so far.

Summary to date:

James Corrie's parents apppear to be John Corrie and Hellen McCartney

John Corrie's parents - Nathaniel Corrie and Jannet Clingan

Hellen McCartney's parents - John McCartney and Sophia Wilson
