In 1881 Census 13 Milton Road, Wokingham James Watts head age 35 Auctioneer and Estate Agent also Coal & Coke Merchant. 1891 Census 7 Broad Street Watts James Married M age 48 1843 Auctioneers Valuer Surveyor Land & Building House agent & Secretary to The Wokingham Water Company Watts Julia Wife married F age 44 1847 Wokingham Watts Julia Edith daughter single f 16 1875 Wokingham Watts Ralph H Son single M age 9 1882 Wokingham Watts Hubert S Son Single M age 8 1883 Wokingham Watts Harold Son Single M age 4 1887 Wokingham Watts Florence J H Davies adopted daughter single F age 20 1871 Wellington Somerset House Florence Servant single F age 13 General domestic Servant Arborfield Berkshire
Could anyone tell me who were the parents of Florence Julia Howe Davies born 1871 in Ashburton Devon? I have a strong believe that Florence was brought up by her cousin J Edith Hall nee Watts, either because her parents died or her mother married again. Florence's parents may be Agnes Sophia Davies nee Watts & Thomas Roberts Davies(of Newmarket Canada married Mar q 1855 in Wokingham). Agnes Sophia is listed on a headstone in the baptist church, Wokingham but doesnt give a date: In loving memory of James Watts who died May 4th 1863 aged 59 also near this spot Maria Elizabeth wife of the above who died March 8th 1846aged 41 also of Agnes Sophia wife of T R Davies ................illegible
Can anyone spot the family on any census
Thanks regards Pauline.

Hi Pauline (and LKL ),
Are you positive the middle name is Julia?
The one birth registration I can see is Florence Isabel H Davies, Jun quarter 1871 Tiverton.
This girl seems to be 1 month old in 1871, daughter of a Julia:
1871 RG10/2167 52 29 Collumpton, Devon Gravel Walk Lucinda Skinner, head, wid, 80, Tallow Chandlers wid, b. Devon Uffculme Julia Davis, niece, mar, 35, Draper's wife, b. Devon Uffculme Florence I Davis, grand niece, 1 mo, b. Collumpton Mary Ann Blackmore, nurse, mar, 42, Nurse Carpenter's wife, b. Uffculme

Hi
Can I just add that the 1871 census has Thomas Davis shown as a widower and then crossed out and married inserted
If the Julia Davis in 1871 is the correct one (which I'm sure she is) is it her "death" we should be looking for
I still say you should get a copy of Florence's birth cert as there are too many "maybe's" and not enough definites

Hi Sophia Agnes's mothers name was Maria Elizabeth so it looks like she used her mothers name. Hmm, I wonder why? Thanks,, for the second marriage, I thought there must be one but just couldnt find it! Thanks again, most appreciated.
regards Trish

Not only do we have the connection to Maria Elizabeth Watts nee Weeks, mother of Agnes Sophia but the name Howe - Florence Julia Howe Davies was born Ashburton in 1871, so her father wasnt around when she was born, gets more & more involved. Agnes Sophia must have been pregnant and the father married her in 1855, but left her more or less straight away and married again in 1870. I wonder if she was legally divorced? Could anyone give me the 1871 Census for Thomas Davis widower (crossed out then altered to married). Looking at this it looks as though they must have emigrated before 1855 as eldest daughter Maria Elizabeth Davies was born in Newmarket Canada. Hmmm gets more & more tied in knots! regards Trish

By deleting the comments on this thread that 'twas a duplicate of another one - and that at least 2 people had wasted time in duplicating results - the opportunity to alert the OP (Trish) of 'best-practice' in posting requests has been lost.
