Industrial School 1891 Marygate

Can anyone please help with information on York Boys Industrial School Marygate (ST.Olafe) York in 1891.  I am trying to find out what sort of establishment this was.  My gt grandfather was there and it says he was a musician in training but i understand that these places were reform schools.  Am i wrong and was he a choir boy or similar.

Any information will be interesting even if he was a "bad boy".  Thank you for your help.
