I'd be very grateful if anybody could help with the location of the family of my GGGG-Grandfather in the census records of 1841 and 1851. His name was Donald McLEAN and he was always referred to as a merchant from Fort William, even at the time of his marriage.
His family around 1841 might have looked something like this:-
Donald McLEAN age uncertain - Merchant of Fort William, Inverness. Margaret McLEAN (nee McKENZIE) aged 23, born in the parish of Kilmallie, Argyll, in 1818. They were married in the parish of Kilmallie, Argyll, in 1835.
Children: Hugh McLEAN aged 5, christened in the parish of Kilmallie, Argyll, in 1836. Ann McLEAN aged 3, christened in Fort William, Inverness, in 1838. Jessie Ann McLEAN aged 1, born in Fort William, Inverness, in 1840.
The above has been constructed from marriage and christening records, as well as the death certificate of Hugh McLEAN, but it would be very nice to have some confirmation from census data, and see whether perhaps there were more children, or whether any of those mentioned had died young. Hugh McLEAN emigrated to Australia in the 1850's, but there is some confusion as to whether he made the journey around 1850, or around 1856. The census from 1851 might also provide some kind of resolution in this matter.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated,
Marc Roberts

Hi Marc
I have found your family in the 1841 Census for FortWilliam and it's pretty much as you thought! Below is a copy from the census:
MALL F.W.MAIN-ST.LOW 6 DONALD MACLEAN M 40 MERCHANT N MALL F.W.MAIN-ST.LOW 6 MARGARET MACLEAN F 25 Y MALL F.W.MAIN-ST.LOW 6 CATHERINE MACLEAN F 30 DRESSMAKER Y MALL F.W.MAIN-ST.LOW 6 EWAN MACLEAN M 5 Y MALL F.W.MAIN-ST.LOW 6 ANN MACLEAN F 2 Y MALL F.W.MAIN-ST.LOW 6 JESSIE-ANN MACLEAN F 0 Y MALL F.W.MAIN-ST.LOW 6 AGNES MACNAUGHTON F 14 SERV.FEMALE N
Sorry I can't help with the 1851 census. I'm stuck on access to that census too which I need for similar reasons. It's not available on line as yet although it's work in progress I believe. You can get the 1841/61/81 census on line at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ked1/41ftwillcen4.html I found your family in page 4 which is included in the above URL. Go to the main menu from there for the rest of region or the 61/81 censuses.
Happy hunting!
Monica
