Penitentiary in Hull
« on: Wednesday 27 May 09 14:33 BST (UK) »

I wonder if anyone knows anything about a Penitentiary on Anlaby Road in Hull?

I have come across someone who was an inmate there on the 1871 census.  There seems to have been only about 20 female inmates.   It raises the question of what kind of misdemeanours or crimes these ladies may have committed.

Any information about the place would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Thank you very much indeed!  Very helpful.  The family of the young lady in question had moved to Northumberland and I suspect she "chose" not to go with them.  I believe I know why but will never be able to prove it.

I had a feeling it was not a criminal institution but more a place for misdemeanours or indiscretions because of the staffing level shown on the census.

Appreciated!

Hi

There was a workhouse on Anlaby Road. Its now part of Hull Royal Infirmary. Check out

http://www.workhouses.org.UK/

I don't think it was ever a penitentiary.
