I hoping to make a connection between Ireland and Canada.   William and Matilda  are my gr gr granparents and came to Canada in 1847.

In that case your next step would be to get a copy of the marriage certificate. It should list their residences at the time of the marriage (townlands) as well as names and occupations of both fathers and names of 2 witnesses. For anything earlier you'll need to search for church records, of they exist but bear in mind that weddings usually took place in bride's church.

Civil registration of births (and deaths and Catholic marriges) began in 1864 so there will be no birth certificates for William and Matilda.
1901 is the first complete census for Ireland.
Therefore, you do need to get the marriage certificate. It should list the fathers' names but not the mothers.
Before searching in Irish records you need to check all Canadian sources (death certificates, birth certificates of children, gravestones, etc.) for clue.

Are there no clues as to Irish connection in Canadian sources? Like any research you have to go through all available sources step by step and Irish research pre civil registration is not easy even with an exact place (townland) to start with.

You have posted the date and place of marriage but in order to get names of both fathers you will need to get the marriage certificate. The indexes to civil registration are online (link below) but that only gets you the index details needed to order the marriage certificate (name, date, registration district, volume and page number).
Very few Irish church records are available online.

What I was hoping is that other researchers of my family in Ireland have this missing link and we could correspond.

It's certainly possible that someone researching these families might see your post so if you wish to wait for a response you may do so.
Meanwhile you might want to look at the Tyrone resources posted at the top of the Tyrone board:

-and all Irish Resources:

As Aghadowey suggests your first port of call would have to be the marriage certificate.  Here are the marriage details from EmeraldAncestors.com subscription site:-

Date of Marriage   4 May 1847
Groom Name   William BUCHANAN
Bride Name   Matilda CARSON
Church   Crew Bridge Church of Ireland
Parish   Ardstraw
Civil District   Castlederg
County   Tyrone

The certificate will give addresses and father's names for the bride and groom which will enable you to connect your couple to a wider Irish family.

Details from marriage certificates are available from most Northern Irish district councils for around £4 provided you have the name of the bride and groom and the exact date and place of the ceremony (as provided by Emerald above).  The relevant council in this case is Strabane and their district registrar can be contacted by phone or email via the following link:-

http://www.strabanedc.com/council/services/births-deaths-marriages-and-civil-partnerships/

Once you have these details, post them here and someone should be able to help.

A good place to start would be Griffith Valuation which would give details of where their families lived:-

http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_form.php

but you need addresses and father's names as a starting point (a quick check of Griffith shows 11 Carson families in Ardstraw parish in 1860).

Good luck

HI
I received the marriage certificate...somehow I believe the name of the place William Buchanan resided in is not a correct spelling.

However I have William Buchanan married May 4 1847 22 years old a Bachelor living in Carandaragh father is Robert Buchanan and he is a farmer

Matilda Carson 21 years old a spinster residing in Drumclamph her father is Samuel Carson a farmer.

Is this enough to make a connection?  Thanks rr
