I am trying to find out who Esther's parents & siblings were?
Esther was born abt 1821 Laxfield Suffolk -married Samuel Ramsey 1840 ( July- Sept)-according to the BDM website info.
Marriage record shows:
"Father’s names are Edward Ramsey and James Riches. It was signed in the presence of Allen Ramsey and Caroline Cooper. Their marks were crosses X. I have just noticed that Esther was under age. "
There are 2 James Riches born about the same time period:
1841 Census=
1. James (b. 1791) Hoxne -married to Barsheba children Maryann & Rose are shown
2. James (b. 1801)-St Mary Bungay-marr-Elizabeth- children-Henry, Hannah, & Esther
I am assuming that #2 would be the right one for my Esther - However I have no clue if Bungay is near Laxfield??
I think there is also another Esther B.1821- who parents were William & Maria ( Cattermole ) Riches
William & Maria's children ( per BDM ):
Esther b. 1821- Laxfield James b.1822- Laxfield Benjamin b. 1831-Laxfield George b. 1831- Laxfield Possible Amos (b. 1820)
(maybe be more children -I am not sure??)
I am not sure which Esther is the correct one?? Can anyone help?

Is her fathers occupation shown on the marriage cert?
If so - does it link to either of the 1841 entries?
Ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 yrs in 1841 so the James b 1801 could have been born between 1801-1804
The James b 1796 could have been born between 1796-1799
The first one (potentially) may have only been 17 when Esther was born
The second (potentially) may have been 22

Carole both Fathers were labourers I saw the marriage cert on an Ancestry Tree. One tree has James married to a Susan.
I noticed from Census Esther is very consistant with when and where she was born, and was a widow for a long time.

Both Edward Ramsey & James Ramsey are shown on Esther & Samuel's marriage certificate as "labourers"
So not much help is it? I am not sure what age they called "under age" for a girls then? Was it under 18 yrs?
Sorry to ask so many questions,
Thanks for your help,
Jila:)

Samuel Ramsey's parents = Edward Ramsey (b. 1768- Framsden) & Susan Allen( b. abt 1776-suffolk)
Census 1841- listed Edward (b. 1771) with son James (15yrs)& Susan (6yrs) in Bosmere Coddenham Swilland Suffolk
If this is the right Edward & James - then James would be b. abt 1786
Edward died 26 Oct 1852 Swiland St Mary Suffolk
Esther's death certificate info:
Died 23rd. December 1910 at No 7 Holland Road , Ipswich . Age 89 years. Widow of Samuel Ramsey a Farm Labourer. Cause of death, Old age and Senile Gangrene. Informant, E Ramsey, Son. Present at the death, 7 Holland Road, Ipswich. When registered, 23rd. December 1910. Registration District Ipswich. 1910 Death in the Sub-district of Ipswich Eastern in the County of Ipswich. Comment. She was therefore born in the year1821-1822.

Can I just mention that Laxfield is a parish within the Hundred of Hoxne, so -
1. James (b. 1791) Hoxne -married to Barsheba (Bathsheba?) children Maryann & Rose are shown this might mean that he was born in Laxfield, or it could indeed refer to the parish of Hoxne.
Census 1841- listed Edward (b. 1771) with son James (15yrs)& Susan (6yrs) in Bosmere Coddenham Swilland Suffolk Bosmere and Claydon was the name of a Hundred (district).
The parishes/villages of Coddenham and Swilland are not adjacent (in fact three parishes between them).
I think some parish record look ups might help sort out some of these people/dates for you.

Thanks again,
I am trying to get more info from a few Ramsey (Uk) cousins on this James & his wife's name. Perhaps they can help me too.
I have seen a James & Susan in Bikers Hill Laxfield Hoxne (Dennington) - several children on the 1871 & 1881 census.
I have also seen James & Bathsheda ( this name ring a bell with me-not sure of previous info or just seeing it on the Census??)
Sorry I am not too familar with all these parish names & town names etc as I do not live in the Uk.
Thanks again Jila

Hi Jila,
I need to know all the parishes as I look after all the Local History Recorders in parishes throughout the county.
I also have several excellent maps at home. You can buy maps of all the parishes very cheaply from the Suffolk Record Office printed on A3 - would not be too expensive to Australia? You may be able to download from their web site?
Another confusing list in your last message
Laxfield, Hoxne, Dennington
These can all be referring to separate parishes or to Hoxne Hundred and two separate parishes? Dennington and Laxfield are just quiet little villages now, but both were busy in the 1800s with many tradesmen and shops etc. Laxfield is in the news at the moment as the last shop is about to be converted into something else and the villagers want their Post Office Stores to remain as it is - the focal point of the village.
You can check out all the parish churches for the villages at www.suffolkchurches.co.uk

Hope this might help
Map of the whole county in context of East Anglia http://www.maps-of-britain.co.uk/map-of-suffolk.htm
On this map, the parish directly above the parish/market town of Framlingham is Dennington and going north again the next parish is Laxfield http://www.maps-of-britain.co.uk/map-of-suffolk.htm
Suffolk Record Office http://www.suffolk.gov.uk/LeisureAndCulture/LocalHistoryAndHeritage/SuffolkRecordOffice/Shop
this URL will take you to the Suffolk Record Office shop and you can buy a Map pack - this pack has been compiled to assist researchers. It contains five diagrammatic maps of Suffolk ecclesiastical and administrative areas. This will cost GBP 2.45 plus postage between GBP1.71 and GBP2.94 depending on where you are in the world. I could not find one to download at the SRL, but the one I use most is the '19th Century Parish Map'.
Pat ... off to cook supper now
