NASH Village - which church?
« on: Saturday 14 November 09 08:32 UTC (UK) »

I have found a possible ancestor who lived in the village of Nash, near Whaddon, in 1791.

I can't find any early PR's for Nash and have found that the local church appears to have been built in 1857.

Anyone have any idea where Christenings, Marriages and Burials were carried out for the villagers of Nash pre 1857?

Thanks

Bucks FHS website say Nash was seperated from Whaddon in 1854 to create Nash & Thornton

If you fail with Whaddon, Thornton was a parish by itself with registers existing from 1562.  Nash is located half way between Whaddon and Thornton.  If you post the people and dates that you are looking for I have some Thornton registers.

Hi David,

Thanks for your offer to check Thornton

I'm rather clutching at straws with this lot as I have very limited information. All I have is the name "Widow Harrup" in 1791 in Nash.  Roll Eyes

I believe she had a daughter called Mary who was possibly born 1750-1765, again most likely in Nash.

There is a Will in Berks CC for a Henry Harrup of Nash who died pre 1791 - he may have been the Widow Harrup's husband but I have no way of confirming that.

At this stage, it looks like I need to go through the PR's in detail and rule out some of the Harrup family members and just see who's left.  Undecided

Hi Di

Had a quick look through the Posse Comitatus which lists all males over the age of 16 (who are able to fight Napoleon) with a separate list of horse/waggon/cart owners in 1798.  There are not many Harrup(p)s.

Adstock
William & Thomas - shoemakers

Gt Horwood
Henry - farmer - 5 horses 1 waggon 2 carts
John - farmer
Thomas & William - Labourers

Tattenhoe
Henry - Labourer

Winslow with Shipton
Thomas - Labourer

Nash
Maria - 6 Horses 1 Waggon 1 Cart

These records can be found on line at the Buckinghamshire Record Society website.

Thanks for checking through those records Jenny.

Maria Harrup of Nash looks very interesting and worth following up.

I'll have a look at that website - appears they may have some rather interesting info online  Cool

Much appreciated

I don't have the Thornton baptisms only marriages and burials.  The following might be of interest.

William ye sonne of Thomas Harrup blacksmith and Anne his wife buried 15 Dec 1656
Thomas Junior son of Thomas buried 30 Nov 1671
Thomas Harrup was church warden in 1673
Thomas Harrup was buried 1 Sep 1678 in woollen
Anne Harrup widow was buried 26 May 1691

Thanks for checking for those records David.

I'll keep those on file until I get back the extra 100 years or so.

Good to see that the Harrups were long time residents in the area though - that might just make my research a bit easier in the long run.

I just need a few more facts to fit my theories and then it will all be so eeeeasy  Grin

Thanks for your help

Thanks for checking the baptisms as well David.

I'll keep searching - I'll sure it will all come clear - eventually  Roll Eyes

Some ancestors just make us work a lot harder than others unfortunately!

Gosh those do look good Tazzie and fit nicely with the birth of Maria/Mary.

Unfortunately the will for a Henry Harrup that is on file is dated 1787 so I don't think it's the same guy.

It does appear that there are quite a few Henry Harrups around the area at that time and I really have no idea if my Widow Harrup was even married to a Henry. The date of the will and the place name of Nash just looked so good so I was rather hoping it was the same/right guy.  Roll Eyes

I believe that Mary - possible dau of Widow Harrup - may have married in 1790 so I guess her birth would be circa 1765-1775.

The Henry you've found may be a brother of Mary or at least a relation but as I have so little to go on at this stage it's pure speculation until I can get more facts.

Really appreciate your help - many thanks
