Hello listers
I am seeking help to try and resolve whether family hearsay regarding my Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Dye, is correct or otherwise.
My Great Grandmother is said to have been a nanny to Lady Dianna Duff-Cooper (nee Manners, 1892 – 1986), the youngest daughter of the 8th Duke of Rutland. The event is said to have been mentioned in the memoirs of (Lord) Duff-Cooper.
Unfortunately I can find no confirmation of the event. There is no reference that I have found in "The Duff-Cooper Diaries" although there may be other memoirs that I have not located. The only "supporting" information I have found is that my Great Grandmother is listed as being a Nurse Domestic on both the 1901 and 1911 Census returns.
Any advice on how I can check this event further would be appreciated.
Cheers Ian Melbourne, Australia

Hi Ian and welcome to rootschat.
Maybe you should try to track down a biography or better and autobiography of Diana Manners -Duff-Cooper as her childhood days would most likely mention her nanny- so family heresay would thus be confirmed or dismissed. Perhaps a place to see if such a book exists would be in the British Library collection. It is searchable online- try both Manners and Duff-Cooper. You'd then know if such a book has been published in Britain. You should then be able to borrow a book on interlibrary loan if such a book exists. charlotte

Hi again Ian, let us know how you get on... tracking down a book and then if the book gives you the info you seek.
Funny that The Duke of Rutland is in your enquiry as my grandparents had in their employ his one ex-cook... don't know if that reassuring about the fare to be had at my grandparents dinner table or not

Hi Charlotte
I located two books in my local library:
(1) "Autobiography: The rainbow comes and goes; The light of common day; Trumpets from the sleep", Cooper, Diana, Lady, Vicountess of Norwich; Salisbury, Michael Russell, 1979.
(2) "Diana Cooper", Ziegler, Philip; London, Hamilton, 1981.
The former makes extensive reference to the nannies of Diana Manners. Unfortunately, none of the four mentioned were my Great Grandmother. I am now inclined to believe that the hearsay within my family is not substantiated.
Thank you for your help.
Cheers Ian

That's disappointing Ian, but stories circulate and grow in families and mostly tend to go upwardly mobile
Is yout g. grandmother in any census shown as living in the vicinity of that lot?
If not, then at least you have checked it out so no point in going down that path again...
