I am trying to find information on Hannah Hyland. Born approx 1828 in area of BATTLE. She married John Croft 29th May 1846(cert) They came to Australia in 1848. Marriage certificate states. Hannah was 20 at the time of marriage, John was 19. No other details for Hannah. John's father was Henry Croft, Bricklayer.. Residence at the time of Marriage, is Battle for both of them. John was a labourer and Hannah was a servant. Married in the "Parish Church". that would be St Mary's??
Thanks for any help

Hi Ellegee,
In the 1841 Census it looks as though she is in the Union Workhouse at Battle age 11. She has Eliza Hyland with her age 13.
There is also a John Croft in the workhouse age 11 along with Henry Age 13, Reuben Age 10, Matthew Age 8 and Seth Age 6.

Hi Sean, thanks for your prompt reply. How do I go about verifying that they are the right people. I only know his dad was Henry and mother, Ann( from his death cert). That would make Hannah only 18 at her marriage, but who says she knew her right age anyway.
Thanks ELLEGEE

I guess you would need to find some workhouse records, someone on here will know more about that than me. I have tried looking for a relevant baptism for Hannah Hyland and have found a couple but I am not sure if they are correct. I will post them up for you anyway in a minute.
Who were the witnesses on the marriage certificate? That might help to narrow it down. Do you have any emmigration/immigration records that might help?
Sean

The closest Hyland ones are the following, I am just worried by the fact that her father was a 'gent' and then they end up in the workhouse. Maybe there was a recession on !
St Mary & St Nicholas, Etchingham Hannah Hyland born 31st Oct 1829 bap 13 Jul 1832 Father: Joseph(gent) Mother: Elizabeth Abode: Lodge Farm Elizabeth Hyland bap 20 Oct #### Father: Joseph Mother: Elizabeth Abode: Etchingham
Just a note: All the baptisms have been found from the Sussex Family History Group, considering this seems to be the area that your relatives are in it might be worth joining to access their database. It only costs aroundf £12 for the year, well worth it !

Hi Sean, Wow, you have been busy. Many thanks, its seems like you are on the right trail. Yes,I probably should join the site you mentioned. I will put in a bit more of an effort to find out the immigration details. Had no luck today but a visit to Sydney might help there. A rumor from my aunt was that one of the relatives was born on the wrong side of the blanket. Dont know if this accounts for the workhouse situation.
I'll follow up your information and do some verifying.
many thanks for you tremendous work.

Just a late addition which won't really add to the discoveries so far.
In 1785 Lodge Farm (Etchingham) was owned by Sir John Ladds, it was being rented out by Samuel Noakes Gent for £93. This suggests then that the Hylands moved into the farm later than 1785.
