The assumption is that Jessie was Catherine's child, but there is always, I suppose, the possibility that she is the child of a Downing sibling or relative adopted by Catherine and Henry.
It might be worth getting the birth certificate to establish who the parents were - it might give you a lead.

Hi Jennifer,

Would have to agree, but the budget has been exhausted a little proving the main line and the appearance of Jessie and her subsequent disappearance is a puzzle I would like to solve no matter what her connection to the family.

Just to update the Jessie Downing Sturdy story.

In chasing the main line, we applied for the death certiificate of her mother Catherine Thompson Sturdy and in that we found that the informant, present at her death,  signed as Jessie Guest.  Could this be the lost daughter Jessie?

A quick check of the marriage index gives the following marriage:
1897 JunQ Middlesbro,  9d, 988, John Guest and Fanny Jessie Downing

It looks good, but how can I be certain that this is the one I am looking for.  As I understand it, the marriage details would only give the father’s name, if known.  Would the mother’s name appear by default.  Perhaps finding her in the 1881 census, possibly as Fanny Downing, would give some  extra information.

Any suggestions welcome.

I still can't find her  Sad

However, Fanny Jessie appears on the 1911 census index, and her date of birth is c. 1877. A futher search reveals place of birth is Stockton - so these fit well with Jessie Sturdy.

Also in the household are John Guest, b. 1872, Edith Mary b. 1903, Elsie Mary b. 1906 and John Henry b. 1910

She seems to be on the 1901 index as Fanny J. Guest, d.o.b 1877, place of birth Stockton on Tees.
