why would someone be in the South African Infantry when they were born and lived northumberland  and gateshead?

Could the person have worked on the ships at that time? I say this because I have a few that, although born in the uk and who lived in the uk joined the Australian Army and the Canadian Army. In both cases each man was employed on the merchant ships that plied between the UK and the two countries.

Just a thought.

My great-uncle was an officer in the South African Heavy Artillery during WWI. There are a couple of periods on his service record when he was out recruiting from the depot in England. The SAHA had a depots in northern England as well as in the south. Maybe your chap was enticed by a similar recruitment drive.
