On the birth certificate extracts I notice in section 4 it may just show the mothers name or the mother and father - if there is no father listed does this mean they where not married or ................. and in section 5 it can show either the mother or father - why not both?

Hi

Section 4 is details of the parents and just the mother usually indicates an illigitimate birth. If the parents are not married then, as far as I'm aware, the father can only be included if present at registration. Section 5 is the name and address of the informant, ie the person who registered the birth. It is usually one of the parents but occasionally its another person.
