Hi, I am new to Rootschat and hoping to solve my mystery.
Looking for a marriage between John Byrn born approx 1830 (sometimes spelt Byrne) in Kilkenny to Ellen / Eleanor born approx 1825 (sorry no surname) before 1850.
Children born also to this couple in Kilkenny.
Mary (Mary Ann) Byrn born approx 1844-1847 (ships list says age 10, but family says aged 7 when come to Australia in 1854) James Byrn born born approx 1851-52 Catherine Byrn born approx 1853-54
Family immigrated from Portsmouth in England on board the Maitland in 1854. I do not know when or how they travelled to England. Ship record says all were born in Kilkenny Ireland.

Kilkenny is both a city and a county and according to Griffiths Valuation (a taxation survey) there were nearly 1000 Byrne households in the County in 1849.
Link to Griffiths : http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_form.php
There are no Co. Kilkenny listing on Griffiths for the spelling Byrn.
Since the marriage of John and Ellen is well before Civil registration started here in 1864 you will need to search parish registers. The Irish Times website has a map parishes and details of the surviving Catholic records : http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/kilkennyrc.htm
Some Co. Kilkenny parish records are available on the Irish Family History Foundation Website at www.irish-roots.ie Its a pay site and they charge €5 for each record. They have a list of the sources included on the website.
A search of the full county Kilkenny Index (free when you register on the site) for John Byrne marriages between 1842-1850 gives 20 results. Unfortunately there is no way to check the brides name for these without paying to view each record.
Using a baptism search, including fathers name, there are also a couple of possible matches for the birth of James around 1850.
Without a starting location it may be difficult, or expensive, to narrow down the correct Byrne family.
do you have any other clues that might narrow down where the family lived - e.g. town, townland, parish ?

you may already have seen these, but in case you have not - some possible lines of investigation for you :
Google searches show a few webpages by descendants of the same Maitland voyage in 1854 e.g. :
Nolan family : http://stott.customer.netspace.net.au/nolan.htm Cashion/Larkin : http://members.pcug.org.au/~pdownes/dps/cashion.htm
both of these pages refer to passengers with Irish origins. Maybe one of these families has established more details on the voyage.
This PDF document from the Archives of Tasmania website titled 'Immigration Guide' mentioned the Maitland voyage and reference CB7 : http://www.rootschat.com/links/06g9/
'..This item lists the names of the depositors, who were either the immigrants themselves or their sponsors, the amount paid and the amount owing, and whether a family or an individual was paid for. Connected with the Board of Immigration records relating to repayments. (CB7/22 and CB7/23)...'
The sponsor could possibly be family member, local benefactor or on occasions this can be a local authority or poor law union. This could provide a major clue to the family's original residence.
One more idea that can yield possible clues the original location is in the names the family used for houses, farms and businesses in the new homeland, as it does happen that they use the names towns or features from back home.

Thank you Shane for your reply. Sorry I have been a bit long winded in acknowledging your contribution.
At this stage I do not know a lot more that may be of help.
The shipping list for the Maitland says that John Byrn was a "farm? labourer" (the writing is cramped but the word appears to start with f and finish with m). Eleanor is listed as a "dairy maid"
John went to work for John Connell at Campbell Town in Tasmania as a farm labourer for a period of 6 months as listed on the "Register of Hiring or Disposal of Immigrants for the Maitland". John Connell was known to help fellow Irish including some of the political rebels during their time in Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania).
John Byrn died on 24th Aug 1880. The death notice in the Tasmanian paper states he was a native of Kilkenny Ireland and could American papers please copy. I do not know if family went to America from Ireland. It does not appear that family went from Tasmania at this stage.
On leaving the employment of John Connell the family set up business in the sale of liquor. John was listed as a victulator and Ellen ran the Forest Hotel at a town named Tunnack in Tasmania where John died.
Thank you for the other suggestions for contact. I will see what I come up with.
Does anyone know if there would be information available at the Portsmouth departure point of the Maitland.
Thanks once again
Dawn
