Whitby Burial Thomas Bennison
« on: Thursday 28 May 09 19:19 UTC (UK) »

Is anyone able to look up a burial or death for a Thomas Bennison? I think he died between 1823 and 1841 as he is in a Trade Directory for 1823 but does not appear on the 1841 census.

I think he was born around 1763, going by his age at time of marriage.

Any help most appreciated!

Hi Oly

Many thanks for your reply! I did have that baptism, but only from the IGI so none of the details just the date and place really. I was unsure as to whether it was my man or not because of his age compared to that of his wife, but it just has to be him!  I think he may have lied at his wedding because of the age difference! He said he was 40 in 1803!!

Thank you!!

Oly, that is fantastic!! Thank you very much!!

Yes, Thomas's wife was Sarah. She was Sarah Burton, born circa 1783 in Skelton. She died in 1861.

1683! I wonder whether all of my Bennisons are in those records!! Smiley I don't know much about them before Thomas and Sarah, though Thomas has always intrigued me because of the age difference between him and Sarah. I'd always thought he was married previously, but never seen anything to prove it. Perhaps he was just too busy on the farm and once his mother died realised a woman was needed in the house!!!

Hi Soulsister & Oly

I have just been reading your posts, I am not to sure if I have spoken to Soulsister before about the Bennisons, ( the memory is going )

I have two Bennisons in my tree Jane born 1765 and Elizabeth born 1774 in Liverton, they where both married to William Shaw my 4 x great grandfather,Elizabeth was my 4 x great grandmother.

I do not know anything about them befor there marrages, and have often wondered if they where sisters or cousins.

No harm in asking if you have come across them in your research as I would love to know who there father was.

Hi Kath

I have not come across those girls as yet, but I hadn't gotten as far back as that until Oly gave me those details above! If I see anything like them in my search I shall let you know!

Hi Emma

Thank you for that info.

I have been looking at other family trees, and found Jane Bennison 1765 born Brotton, I forget to keep looking back at other trees as people keep adding to them, Elizabeth Bennison was my 4 x G Grandmother.

It looks like they where cousins if Jane was born in Brotton, and Elizabeth was born in Liverton, Elizabeth married William Shaw 3/Dec/1797 in Whitby.

I noticed only one N in the Benison you found.

Thank you Kath

One N isn't unusual with the Bennisons. When looking for my own line of Bennisons I have come across Bennison, Benison and Benson for them. It is also not unusual for it to be seen as Denison or Dennison! Spelling wasn't such a big deal for people way back! My Carricks were originally Carrocks and my Bunyan line was originally Bullion!! So don't dismiss other variants of the surname, it doesn't necessarily mean they aren't yours!  Smiley

I've found the marriage for Elizabeth and William, but can see no baps for their children nor William's marriage to Jane. Do you have further information on them?
