Duncan Mcgregors parents?
« on: Friday 29 May 09 12:39 UTC (UK) »

hi there!

can anybody give me a little push in the right direction for trying to find Duncan Mcgregor's parents?

Duncan Mcgregor b?? (1815?)   married to Janet Clark 1840 and  died 1895 Aberfeldy

on his Death Cert it has that his father is Donald Mcgregor weaver and mother Catherine Mcpherson??  (i can't quite make the name out).  However I have tried SP and cannot get a marriage cert for Donald + Catherine. But there is one submitted by LDS for:

24 MAY 1807      Kenmore, Perth, Scotland

I have no idea who Donald Mcgregors parents are but possibly his fathers name could be "Duncan" again..if that is the way the sons are called in order

any help would be much appreciated.  Thanks

With the parents' names showing on Duncan's death cert., there are these entries showing on IGI, actual extract from the OPRs:

1. JOHN MACGREGOR Christening: 12 OCT 1812 Dull, Perth
2. DUN. MACGREGOR  Christening: 06 MAR 1815 Dull, Perth

You may find more on the OPR index on Scotlands People.

Hi Suz

These two christening entries are actual extract. Mother shows as Cath. MacPherson which is the way you would have to search the SP OPR index. Similarly, Duncan looks to have been indexed as Dunc. MacGregor.

The fact that only two children show to them on the OPR would make me think that you are missing a number of siblings and parents' marriage. Maybe they married in a different parish (as showing on the IGI submitted entry) and had the early children there. As you know, OPRs are never complete, many have been lost or destroyed over the years. Sometimes it is just pages within a Register that have been lost.

thank you monica  Grin

that explains it to me.  i just thought that stuff on SP was "the real " stuff and anything on LDS site was what other people added.

thanks yet again for your time

The information on SP is the real stuff!

With IGI you do have to be careful with the records you are looking at. However, on each IGI entry you will see whether the entry is an actual extract from the OPRs or a member submitted entry (which you have to verify elsewhere as these can be inaccurate).

The two christening entries showing as actual extract on IGI do show on SP, but there are no other birth/christening entries as you have found. The marriage entry which shows on IGI as submitted I cannot see at all on SP so no idea how this has been sourced unfortunately.
