GRANT family in Tipperary
« on: Saturday 11 April 09 09:39 UTC (UK) »

I am interested in making contact with descendants of the GRANT family in Tipperary. I have a substantial amount on my Grant web site

The Grants were a working class Protestant family near Thurles in the early 1700s. One group stayed around Thurles and became Catholic by 1800. And they subdivided between Moyne (see Loughmore thread) and Moyaliff

The other group remained protestant by moving to the northern part of Tipperary, which was more Protestant at that time. Roscrea, Cloghjordan and Shinrone.

Map showing where they lived in Tipperary

They are a microcosm of the problems of living in Ireland at that time - religion, Whiteboys, famine, emigration. There are least two convicts called Grant from the area shipped to Australia, there is an infamous highwayman, there are descendants in USA and Canada. Some went with the Talbot migration.

I have a DNA project ongoing now to make sure that my premises are correct. So anyone descended from the Grants of Tipperary, let's hear from you.

I am starting to pull the dna results together -it takes a while to track down the right people to give the samples.

Results to date confirm that the GRANTS descended from a common root around 1700 in Tipperary. And after a time some changed their religion ( I believe through marriage) from Protestant to Catholic.  So today there are two groups in Tipperary reflecting these two religions.
